Let's talk about the Hack Forums Wiki. What do you want to see in it? - D3xus - Dec 14, 2015

The Hack Forums Wiki has been inactive for a while. Ethereal has been missing in action for over two months. I'm not sure of Viral Dragon's status. I'd like to take this time to get community feedback to see where we stand with the Wiki, and where we go from here.

What do you want to see in the Wiki? Group namespaces?
A simple question. I want the Wiki to be an open community forum where people can contribute their knowledge for the betterment of the forum and make it a place for learning; a dynamic database of information that people who are skilled in a field (or fields) can create immersive tutorials and guides.

I also want to have groups gain the ability to edit their own namespaces on the Wiki; for example, the owner and leaders of Null would have editing privileges within the Null: namespace, along with any user they wanted. Group members could use the Wiki as a more comprehensive and easily accessible source of information than individual threads could be.

Would an award for 50 meaningful contributions encourage activity?
If anyone remembers SupportForums, Hack Forums users could gain the Support Feather award for making 100 high quality posts. I propose doing the same thing for the Wiki: any user who makes 50 high quality and meaningful contributions can get an award for doing so.

But D3xus, the Support Feather made people effectively spam the forum for an award! How will this be different?

The beauty of MediaWiki is that it allows people to see exactly what a user has contributed to an article. If a user claims to have made 50 high quality and meaningful edits, it would be very easy to see if those edits were legitimate and if they added to the respective article. There are only 567 articles on the Wiki; making the minimum number of contributions 100 would be unrealistic. A contribution could also be the creation of a brand new page, or the upload of an important file. If the Group namespace suggestion above is implemented, contributions within a group namespace would count to this award. Therefore, users would be allowed to make contributions to a group they were in, and get an award at the same time if they wanted.

Please post suggestions, questions, rants, and things of the sort below. I want to help lead the way forward into an immersive and interactive Wiki. A Wiki is meant to be open; I want to make it open, but not by my definition of open, but by how the members want it to be open. I hope that makes sense.

Shit if you grant me the writer userbar I'll write all day on the wiki

I think that 100 is a bit much considering the state of the wiki at the moment. If anything I would go with 50ish. I think an award would be a really good idea to get the activity going. I do think the team needs to not be gone as well. Just saying.

Honestly, I see a lot of potential for the wiki. There's so much that could be done to make it just as great as the forum itself.

The body is 50, but the title still says 100. Thanks for the catch.

If the original writers are on hiatus then you should demote them and promote active writers? Just my two cents.

Honestly, i think conor mcgregor should be in it. He beat me in 13 seconds.

That's my intention, but you don't have to be a member of the Writers to contribute to the Wiki. I want to add people who are eager to contribute in the name of the Writers and want to have an authoritative role inside of the team.

That's a really good idea. I feel like if you're only in it for the userbar then you aren't in it to benefit the team or the wiki itself. If you're only in it for the Ub then you shouldn't be in it at all.

How exactly do we go about being a writer?

You have to be recruited. However, anybody can edit the wiki. If your contribution is good enough, it will be approved and used.

You can apply there, and if we like what we see, you can get added. :)

I think the award for 50 meaningful contributions would encourage lots of people

Rule specifics like the warning system that I was looking up a while ago would be nice. I don't know why I had to search the forum for the multiple threads on it.

A Wiki for the forum? That is rather unique. How does one participate in writing for the dedicated forum Wiki?
