The Hack Forums Wiki has been inactive for a while. Ethereal has been missing in action for over two months. I'm not sure of Viral Dragon's status. I'd like to take this time to get community feedback to see where we stand with the Wiki, and where we go from here.
What do you want to see in the Wiki? Group namespaces?
A simple question. I want the Wiki to be an open community forum where people can contribute their knowledge for the betterment of the forum and make it a place for learning; a dynamic database of information that people who are skilled in a field (or fields) can create immersive tutorials and guides.
I also want to have groups gain the ability to edit their own namespaces on the Wiki; for example, the owner and leaders of Null would have editing privileges within the Null: namespace, along with any user they wanted. Group members could use the Wiki as a more comprehensive and easily accessible source of information than individual threads could be.
Would an award for 50 meaningful contributions encourage activity?
If anyone remembers SupportForums, Hack Forums users could gain the Support Feather award for making 100 high quality posts. I propose doing the same thing for the Wiki: any user who makes 50 high quality and meaningful contributions can get an award for doing so.
But D3xus, the Support Feather made people effectively spam the forum for an award! How will this be different?
The beauty of MediaWiki is that it allows people to see exactly what a user has contributed to an article. If a user claims to have made 50 high quality and meaningful edits, it would be very easy to see if those edits were legitimate and if they added to the respective article. There are only 567 articles on the Wiki; making the minimum number of contributions 100 would be unrealistic. A contribution could also be the creation of a brand new page, or the upload of an important file. If the Group namespace suggestion above is implemented, contributions within a group namespace would count to this award. Therefore, users would be allowed to make contributions to a group they were in, and get an award at the same time if they wanted.
Please post suggestions, questions, rants, and things of the sort below. I want to help lead the way forward into an immersive and interactive Wiki. A Wiki is meant to be open; I want to make it open, but not by my definition of open, but by how the members want it to be open. I hope that makes sense.
