Writing characters to a file instead of encrypting = faster=? - Dangerous Beef - May 22, 2017 Been wondering if it's actually faster than encrypting a file, say you write 512 bits to a file. That should be faster than reading + Encrypting + Writing right ? If so why doesn't encryption based software do this instead ? * - archangel.dmitry - May 22, 2017 Encryption puts additional overhead on timing unless it is supported on hardware level. * - Dangerous Beef - May 23, 2017 (May 22, 2017 05:45 PM)archangel.dmitry Wrote: Encryption puts additional overhead on timing unless it is supported on hardware level. Even though it's hardware accelerated it would still need to write the data all over again. * - archangel.dmitry - May 23, 2017 It depends on implantation. Many SSDs support hardware encryption without a need to "write the data all over again". * - Dangerous Beef - May 23, 2017 (May 23, 2017 04:48 PM)archangel.dmitry Wrote: It depends on implantation. Did some research and it appears there is a performance degradation with Drive encryption though it's mainly based on the processor and drive in question. I guess i have to test it for myself to see if it's actually faster or not. Thanks though. |
