Writing characters to a file instead of encrypting = faster=?

Been wondering if it's actually faster than encrypting a file, say you write 512 bits to a file. That should be faster than reading + Encrypting + Writing right ?

If so why doesn't encryption based software do this instead ?
Encryption puts additional overhead on timing unless it is supported on hardware level.

Even though it's hardware accelerated it would still need to write the data all over again.
It depends on implantation. Many SSDs support hardware encryption without a need to "write the data all over again".

Did some research and it appears there is a performance degradation with Drive encryption though it's mainly based on the processor and drive in question. I guess i have to test it for myself to see if it's actually faster or not. Thanks though.
