How to make a custom audio visualizer in After Effects? - Larceny - Jul 27, 2017
So basically, my goal is to be able to take a render of a character, convert it to a path/mask, and have an audio spectrum go around the outline of the character, similar to this:

I know, I was just making sure I was on the right track lol. I'll mess around in After Effects a bit today, then if I come across anything I'll be sure to let you know.

I got something close to it by autotracing my render and having the spectrum follow the mask, but then the effects only came out of the mask anchor points. The only idea I have would be to do a custom outline and put like 500 anchor points by hand, but with what I want to use this for, I'd have to do this several times a day with different characters, and that's a ridiculous time sink.

Hi. I am confident that I am a top user when it comes to AE.
You can do this easily.

Make the mask out of the picture layer. Copy and paste the mask onto the layer with the audio spectrum.
Use the path tool in Audio Spectrum to line it up.
Configure it from there.
Go to my Discord or to the Influence discord and ask for Ally, I'll be able to help you.

Yep basically this. There are also some plugins out there that make it easier but honestly it's easy enough
