Breaking Bad: Strain Theory - Jackmeoff604 - Apr 8, 2018

I'm writing a paper on strain theory by Robert K Merton and using scenes from Breaking Bad for examples.
I'm stuck on one of the adaptations: Retreatism.

Are there any scenes that show retreatism in Walter White or any characters in a scene?

If you don't know what retreatism is, here you go: the rejection of cultural goals and institutionalized means. Meaning that you don't care about achieving anything in life nor caring what you do in life that's deviant or criminally. An example would be a drug user or alcoholic because they do not have a goal of becoming rich or anything, nor they doing any anything bad. they simply just do not care.

if you have any scenes, please recommend them to me!

thanks,
Jack me off604 🤝

Its been a while since I watched the show, but how about the scenes after Jane's death when Jesse was feeling devastated and stayed at home for several days doing nothing?

I agree with this example, I took sociology earlier this year and that seems to fit the definition of retreat-ism.

Thanks fellas! I've thought of a different scene, where Jesse kills Gale and he got PTSD and all he did was party, did drugs, and did nothing! I might add that scene too because I need more words, lol. I'm like 800 words short.

There seem to be a lot of scenes showing retreatism, that one would also be a good choice.
