Moving from Vegas - Xerotic - Nov 30, 2020

One year follow-up to this thread: https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=6027872

After a year of living in Las Vegas I have decided to move back to the midwest (near Chicago). I really enjoyed my experience and some of my time here. It's a lot warmer than the climate I am use to, but it might just be too warm for my liking. Vegas is a desert. 115° F every day during Summer. Even after the sun goes down the heat persists for hours. There is very little greenery. For the most part, any greenery in Vegas is either heavily maintained or completely fake. There is mostly just dirt everywhere. I think it's rained once the past 7-8 months. Even then... it was just a tiny sprinkle.

The city itself and surrounding area does have fun things to do. I am more of a nature explorer vs city dweller when it comes to some entertainment so I spent a lot of time hiking and the like. A lot of people might not realize it, but Vegas is in a valley completely surrounded by mountains. If you don't like those, there is still the city life. Enjoy casinos? This is the place for you. Easily obtained, abundant, legal marijuana? Vegas has you covered. City where you generally feel accepted even as an outsider? Another good thing about Vegas. Lots of people move here with complex stories and perhaps the large transient quality of the population lends towards a more inclusive society.

All that said... it's lonely when you only know a small handful of people. I work from home and am not in school so natural social situations are hard to come by. Throw in COVID-19 and meeting people this year has been really tough. Every holiday that passes feels like another missed opportunity to see friends/family. Long weekends turn into boring weekends where you don't have people to spend it with.

I was extremely excited one year ago to move to Las Vegas but today I think I am even more excited to move back to be around friends and family. It's a strange thing.

Anyway, I move back in 2 weeks. It'll be another 3-4 day drive of ~1800-2000 miles. We are taking a different route this time so we won't be able to see as many friends along the way (the route we took here let us see a lot of friends across the country), but we will at least be visiting Mount Rushmore. We've never been there and it's one of those landmarks that is cool to see at some point in a lifetime.

It's stressful and expensive moving across the country, but I'm looking forward to it.

I haven't lived with my family in almost 6 years. I'm turning 22 in January and I've been considering moving back to my home state as I now like 2,000+ miles away. Somewhat similar situation. Just not sure if I miss my family THAT much lol

Where I live now, I moved right before COVID and I'm somewhat of a lone wolf so I have absolutely 0 friends here besides my room mate & my internet friends who I pay for their plane tickets to come hang out with me 🤐

to everyone else reading, if you like all the things Xerotic mentioned like abundant weed & bars, come hang out with me in DC, i'll be your guide. we even have decriminalized phychedelics

I don't know how long I'll stay, but I do feel that for now it is the right move.

Hope the experiences, whether good or bad experiences, will be beneficial to your next journey in life and that your transition moves smoothly for you.

All the best to you, man!

I’ve visited Chicago before and liked it. And the job market is usually good there too.

I saw an amazing house in Vegas and thought wow for that price Vegas must be great but you made it sound horrible. Not sure I could live in a place with no rain ever. In the end you need to be in a place where you're close to people if you ever need them. Nothing comes before happiness. Probably a nice life experience to spend a year living in Vegas anyway.

Yeah. It was a nice experience. I'm in a lot better shape mentally and physically plus I've learned a bit more about what I want out of life.

There is more variety, sure. Over 2 million people in the valley vs the ~100k in my hometown.

Problem with apps like [BRAND NAME REMOVED] here is that you get all the tourists wasting your swipe stack. Always people coming in and out of Vegas.

Welcome back (soon) to the Chicago suburbs! I bet you can’t wait for it to be 60 degrees one day and 15 degrees with a severe windchill the next day!

All jokes aside, I would not be able to live in a desert for that long. Heat is hard on me, but there is of course some beauty in the mountains. The beauty just wouldn’t be enough for me to want to stay permanently. Although I hate this state and plan to move out West, it most likely won’t be for long. Being away from family & friends will be a struggle.

I'm sure I will grow tired of the extreme cold again! I've already lived in multiple different US states throughout my life. The midwest, the south, and now out west here in Vegas. I bet I'll be traveling somewhere else to live before too long.

Moving always feels exciting somewhat, it always gives me a new start both mentally and physically, so I might know how you are feeling now. True about desertic areas--I couldn't imagine me living in one either. Rain, real green, is something I personally crave after a while.

Nice! best of luck with the move. I moved from Australia to the US this year. I find no income tax in Vegas appealing. Is this made up through other charges?
