One year follow-up to this thread: https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=6027872
After a year of living in Las Vegas I have decided to move back to the midwest (near Chicago). I really enjoyed my experience and some of my time here. It's a lot warmer than the climate I am use to, but it might just be too warm for my liking. Vegas is a desert. 115° F every day during Summer. Even after the sun goes down the heat persists for hours. There is very little greenery. For the most part, any greenery in Vegas is either heavily maintained or completely fake. There is mostly just dirt everywhere. I think it's rained once the past 7-8 months. Even then... it was just a tiny sprinkle.
The city itself and surrounding area does have fun things to do. I am more of a nature explorer vs city dweller when it comes to some entertainment so I spent a lot of time hiking and the like. A lot of people might not realize it, but Vegas is in a valley completely surrounded by mountains. If you don't like those, there is still the city life. Enjoy casinos? This is the place for you. Easily obtained, abundant, legal marijuana? Vegas has you covered. City where you generally feel accepted even as an outsider? Another good thing about Vegas. Lots of people move here with complex stories and perhaps the large transient quality of the population lends towards a more inclusive society.
All that said... it's lonely when you only know a small handful of people. I work from home and am not in school so natural social situations are hard to come by. Throw in COVID-19 and meeting people this year has been really tough. Every holiday that passes feels like another missed opportunity to see friends/family. Long weekends turn into boring weekends where you don't have people to spend it with.
I was extremely excited one year ago to move to Las Vegas but today I think I am even more excited to move back to be around friends and family. It's a strange thing.
Anyway, I move back in 2 weeks. It'll be another 3-4 day drive of ~1800-2000 miles. We are taking a different route this time so we won't be able to see as many friends along the way (the route we took here let us see a lot of friends across the country), but we will at least be visiting Mount Rushmore. We've never been there and it's one of those landmarks that is cool to see at some point in a lifetime.
It's stressful and expensive moving across the country, but I'm looking forward to it.
