Dog bitten by another dog - Eran - Apr 5, 2024 Hello. Does anyone have experience with this happening? Earlier today my mom had walked my dog because I was busy all day, and she did it without a leash. My dog is pretty active and she always says that she can't keep up with his pace so walks him without a leash if she sees that nobody else is around. And yes I have warned her about this multiple times but she eventually does it again. Anyways, my dog and and another one were sniffing eachother for 10ish seconds (another owner was walking his dog without a leash) and the other dog attacked mine. He left him 2 bite marks above his neck before the other owner got to his dog. My question is, how urgent is it to bring him to the vet? I am unable to do so today. He seems okay, other than a little sad and he obviously becomes super sensitive when you start to stroke him anywhere near the bite marks area. It hurts him but I've been able to see the scars underneath his coat. I think the other dog's teeth penetrated the skin a little. I know I should seek professional advice but I am just wondering if anyone has had this happen to their dog. UPDATE: I never posted an update on this matter. Regarding my dog - now he's absolutely fine. Actually he's been fine just a few days after the surgery. Yes, he ended up needing surgery, and it was worse than I anticipated. They had to cut out a fairly big part of his neck, picture below. ![]() He took 4 different medications for about 10 days after the surgery and it took 3 months for his hair to fully grow back. I thought he was going to behave differently towards other dogs after the surgery, in terms of being afraid of other dogs, but no - he's still the same old goofy happy doggo. A side story to this - all of this happened while I needed to find another apartment to live, and because I live in a city where most landlords let you stay only outside the summer season (so no staying during June,July,August and half of September), it was very difficult for me to find a place to live. This all took toll on my mental health and dealing with the surgery, eviction and losing my job all in the same week, my stress was at an all time high. However, the dog situation actually solved my apartment problem! I was desperate, so I continued posting in apartment hunting facebook groups that I am looking for an apartment, only this time I attached pictures of my dog from the surgery and added a sappy sad text (which was true, I didn't exaggerate) hoping there are still decent people out there who would offer me an affordable apartment to rent throughout the whole year. 2 days after the post, an old coworker called me and told me that a friend of his saw my post, and called him to check if I was a good guy. I ended up getting a 2 bedroom apartment with a huge garden for my dog, for the same price I was paying a small old studio apartment! This was a very valuable lesson to me - that sometimes life will give you blessings in disguise! It also bonded me a lot more with my dog! <3 RE: Dog bitten by another dog - DashPHP - Apr 5, 2024 How deep is the cut? We have had this happened to our friends dog and we could see pink flesh.. but it was about 1 cm in length so it dried up and healed itself. I would say just keep a look out! There was no bleeding, I see pink flesh and in the center there is maybe 0,3cm of a red area, so slight penetration of the skin? I made sure it's clean around so he doesn't get an infection but I'm still nervous, understandably. Just keep an eye out now and pray for the best! I'm sure the dog will be just fine :) RE: Dog bitten by another dog - Eran - Apr 5, 2024 (Apr 5, 2024 12:17 PM)DashPHP Wrote: I think the dog will be just fine with the precautions you took. If it’s any consolation, my aunt’s dog got bitten in a similar way and we rushed to the vet who just wiped it clean and said to keep an eye on it. I hope it’s nothing more serious than that, and if that other dog ever comes my way I’ll give him the stink eye. But from the description she gave me I'm 95% sure I know which dog it is, he lives across the park I take my dog to. He was also not on a leash and although I'm not sure which breed it is, if he went for the neck, he went for the kill. He always aggressively barks at anyone who walks by his house. Thanks for the comment. I think I may need to take him to the vet anyways. It's getting hard to check the wound as he is sensitive and I think the area is starting to have a bad smell around it :/ RE: Dog bitten by another dog - Komodo - Apr 7, 2024 Send me pictures of the puncture wounds. I’m not a vet by any means but I’ll take a peek. It’ll be the same shit I do for humans when they get bit by the dog. You’ll want to clean it out with a shit ton of clean water ASAP, rule of thumb is about 30-50cc’s of sterile water per cm of wound. That’ll get anything gross in there completely out. To be on the safe side after that we’ll clean it with some sort of antibacterial soap to really get it clean. Depending on the wound you may need glue, sutures, steri-strips, or nothing to close the wound for healing. On top of that we’ll throw Bacitracin or any kind of antibacterial topical ointment on top of that. And lastly probably getting antibiotics, dogs mouths have a shit ton of bacteria in them. Probably some sort of wound / dressing change about every 8-12 hours. That’s about it. How do I go about cleaning the wound myself until I get to the vet tomorrow? Even with 1 spray of an antiseptic he gets really crazy and cries in pain. If I try to touch it I'm afraid he will bite it as its obvious it triggers great pain. Even when hes sleeping he'll randomly move his head a little, and all of a sudden jump and run around the room crying in pain. Ugh I can't wait to get him to the vet tomorrow. I can’t see the wound so just be careful. You want to clean it, but it’s been so long since the dog got the wound you don’t want to break up all the clots and start bleeding again. Keep it as clean as possible. Put some sort of antibacterial topical ointment like Neosporin or bacitracin on it. If you don’t have any just keep it lubricated with something like Vaseline. It’s been a while since the injury so definetly going to need antibiotics. Hopefully it’s not a bad infection. RE: Dog bitten by another dog - l--l - Apr 10, 2024 Sounds like you just need to keep an eye on him for now. I wouldn't bother paying $200 just for a checkup especially if there's no bleeding. Just make sure your dog doesn't start acting weird or lethargic. Also walk the dog with a lease, you're just asking for trouble not doing so.
