Best GUI Linux software for dev workflows? - Hackers - Jan 17, 2025 I use Linux every day on CLI and via SSH or WSL but I don’t use it as my personal OS as often, What are the best picks for GUI software for the following? FTP SSH / Putty Web browser Torrents IDE Video editing Audio editing Adobe or equivalents ? Any other types of recommendations are helpful. I just use CLI with apt packages mostly and grab the repos for anything I need… just not sure about GUI on Linux. RE: Best GUI Linux software for dev workflows? - Bastille - Jan 17, 2025 That's a really good thing to think about moving to Linux. Since I'm using it as my daily OS I've learned a lot. These are my recommendations from my experience : FTP : FileZilla SSH / Putty : Putty / MobaXterm / Remmina (ssh) Web browser : I love Firefox, otherwise Brave for anonymity ? Torrents : Qbittorrent IDE : VSCode (but I'm not an advanced coder) Video editing : KDEnlive Audio editing : Audacity ? Adobe or equivalents : GIMP for Photoshop / Inkscape for Illustrator / Davinci Resolve for Video / Color RE: Best GUI Linux software for dev workflows? - Klonopin - Jan 19, 2025 Torrent: QBittorrent SFTP/SSH/SCP: Putty and normal commands Editor: Visual Studio Code or nvim Browser: Librewolf or Firefox (Firefox can be hardened really easily) here's a guide GFX: Gimp is very nice. That’s good to hear This makes me feel much better about considering a full Linux rig for part of my setup. I’m adding a new machine and wanted to go with Mac but what I really need is Unix/similar - sounds like Linux distros have more than I thought. Been years now since I really used GUI Linux. Truly just daily CLI server work for me there. I think you guys both gave me my answer. No need for a Mac, I can just refactor this PC RE: Best GUI Linux software for dev workflows? - Infinity. - Jan 21, 2025 Screen Recording and Live Streaming - OBS Studio FTP: Ranger file manager with curlftpfs IDE? More like text editor neovim SSH: ?? why? Audio: Audacity Adobe Photoshop --> GIMP RE: Best GUI Linux software for dev workflows? - Yani - Jan 21, 2025 Don't be scared to just jump right into it. For me it felt different in the beginning and I had to google around sometimes, but after a while it becomes just as easy as Windows. For many things even much easier. FTP : The default file browser (Gnome Files) for most such things as it supports FTP. (I think the default KDE one also has it). FileZilla just in case. SSH / Putty : PortX. But personally I started just using the terminal and write 'ssh [email protected]'. (I have aliases for my common servers) Web browser : LibreWolf (With a bit less strict settings) Torrents : QBittorrent IDE : VSCode. (I also use Qt Creator) Video editing : I guess Kdenlive (but I have almost no experience with it so can't compare it) Audio editing : Tenacity. It's an Audacity fork without tracking. I don't use anything more advanced. Adobe or equivalents : GIMP, Inkscape, but also PhotoPea.com because I actually think it's a decent webapp that is easier to use than GIMP. (I stole the markdown from Bastille, hihi) Some others I think are worth mentioning: - LibreOffice - Vesktop (custom Discord client with Vencord. They even had Wayland screensharing for a long time before Discord finally added it) - Thunderbird for mail - PulseAudio volume control - OpenSnitch (GUI firewall with popups asking if you want to allow connections. It has a little bit of a learning curve) - DBeaver CE for database stuff - VirtualBox - Flatseal for managing flatpaks - Nicotine+ (SoulSeek client) - Piper (for logitech mouse profiles) - Lutris (makes it much easier to play Windows games that are not on Steam) If you end up using Gnome (desktop manager): - ArcMenu (start menu like windows) - Dash to Panel (taskbar like windows) - Gnome Tweaks There's a lot more, but those are the GUI ones I recommend. |
