Drunk Driving GOP Governor Suspends Campaign After Causing a 5-Car Crash - The Pact - Oct 19, 2026
On October 18th Alleged Drunk Driving GOP Governor Suspended his Campaign After Alledgedly Causing a 5-Car Crash.
After taking a very long look at the wreckage, Shawn Oliver announced on Oct. 18 that he’s suspending his campaign for Lieutenant Governor. The corrections officer and New Bedford city councillor posted the news on social media, before his phone battery died from all the incoming calls.
“This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters,” please ignore the part where my car flipped over like a stunt reel,” he said. He thanked supporters and asked for privacy, which is fair, because nothing says “rough week” like having to withdraw from a state-wide race and explain to your insurance company why several parked cars are now modern art installations.
Local outlets reported that police responded to a crash where a vehicle hit multiple parked cars and overturned. Two of the cars suffered extensive damage, Oliver was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, negligent operation, marked lanes violation, and speeding, basically collecting traffic charges like they were Pokémon.
His running mate, Minogue, chimed in with the political equivalent of “buddy, sit down.” "After speaking with Oliver, I asked him to suspend the campaign immediately and promised to request his resignation if elected." He added that Oliver “needs to put his family first” and “do the work to ensure this never happens again,” offering help if needed, which is generous, considering the circumstances.

Drinking alcohol is a disaster... Thank God I don't drink, and I'm not allowed to, either. If you're going to drink, at least avoid driving... Don't put other people's lives at risk.

It's funny how people jump to I must have had a past problem because I barely drink, but I don't love it. I never had a problem with it. I want to be more in tune with what is happening around me not less. And just personally for me as a mother getting drunk felt totally wrong even with a baby sitter and stuff so I just didn't drink except on our wedding anniversaries.

Because ballots were already printed, Oliver’s name could not be removed, even though he stopped campaigning. A political historian Tom Whalen said the arrest is likely to cost Minogue [the drunk's running mate] support among independent voters.

Well, I guess you can at least give him some credit for resigning instead of just moving on as if it were nothing more than a little scratch on the bumper. And apparently, there are plans for him to resign if, by some remote chance, he gets elected. Either way, I hope he takes responsibility for all the damage he caused.
This reminds me that there’s a pretty interesting service in China where you can hire a sort of designated driver if you’re drunk. I saw a video where a guy showed up on a scooter, took the guy’s car keys, put his scooter in the trunk, and helped the drunk guy get into the car so he could drive him home hahaha. Do you think something like that would work in the West?
