  Flip in Group Convo
Posted by: Omniscient - Jul 13, 2025 01:26 PM - Forum: Site News - Replies (13)

Got it working (thank you Grok).

Still tweaking but hey, it's a step in the right direction.

Also, MUC's (Multi-User Convo) is now set to max 5 members. These are not meant to be large rooms. All features of PCR (Public Convo Room) will eventually be part of GCR's (Group Convo Rooms).

Thank you.

  Group Convo Rooms
Posted by: Omniscient - Jul 12, 2025 10:58 AM - Forum: Site News - Replies (23)

Working right now on the converting of the Group Convo Rooms to be similar to the old Public Convo Room.

While I mentioned doing notifications I don't think that's gonna work. The PCR didn't log into the database the messages and that's because it would have created a massive DB table into the Gigabytes. Instead it stored the latest 20 messages so that when you entered the room you'd get context. I will likely have to adjust the code for GCR's to behave in the same way with only showing the latest 20 messages when you join the room. Ultimately it doesn't make sense to do notifications in GCR's when you think on it.

I'm thinking that the majority of members want the fun stuff back like /flip and /rain to work in the GCR's. That's my goal and priority over notices.

Socket (Convo and Notices) may be very buggy today as I do my work on the server. Expect it to be down a lot. I don't have a good test env to work with.

  Moving Forward And Recent Events
Posted by: Omniscient - Jul 8, 2025 03:25 PM - Forum: Site News - No Replies

You’ve probably noticed that Hack Forums has seen a lot of change recently. Some long-time members are no longer with us, either by my decision or their own. This wasn’t something I took lightly, but sometimes in order to move forward, you have to clear a path first.

My goal is to take HF in a new direction. That means rethinking how we operate, what kind of community we want, and what kind of members we want to attract. I know that change can be uncomfortable, especially for those who have grown used to the way things were. But real progress happens when you step outside your comfort zone.

The truth is, some people were holding us back, whether they realized it or not. They wanted things to stay exactly as they were, and they weren’t open to new ideas. I want HF to be more than just a place to hang out and chat. I want members who have a vision, who want to build, who bring something new to the table.

Losing active members isn’t easy, and I know it has an effect on the community. Some people are upset, and I get that. But you can’t remove toxic influences without also upsetting a few of their friends. That’s just how it works. I stand by my decision, because I believe it’s necessary for the next phase of HF.

If you’re still here, it means you’re open to where HF could go. I encourage you to be part of this shift. Bring your ideas, your skills, and your passion. Let’s see if we can make HF into something better. Maybe it won’t work, but I’d rather try and fail than not try at all.

I'm locking this because I just want to express myself more than I need replies and feedback.

Thanks for sticking with us through the changes. Expect great things.

  Race Conditions Bounty
Posted by: Omniscient - Jul 8, 2025 10:49 AM - Forum: Site News - Replies (3)

Currently HF has a function to deal with Race Conditions. If you don't know that that is...

AI Quote: A PHP race condition occurs when multiple processes or requests attempt to access and modify shared resources (e.g., a database, file, or session) simultaneously, leading to unpredictable or incorrect outcomes. For example, if two requests try to update a user’s point balance in a MyBB forum at the same time, one update might overwrite the other, causing data inconsistency, such as double-spending points.

In PHP, race conditions often arise in web applications due to concurrent HTTP requests, especially in systems without proper synchronization. They can be mitigated using techniques like database transactions, row locking (e.g., `SELECT ... FOR UPDATE`), or time-based checks, as seen in your `form_post_check` function, which prevents rapid submissions to avoid conflicts in functions like `processSigPurchase`.

Basically we want to make sure that Bytes can't get exploited but other things too have to be checked.

I'm altering the function because it's been buggy. Added some debugging logs as well.

What I'm asking is for members to help me test the Race Conditions on HF and offering a 1000 Bytes Bounty if you can find them in the Bytes system.

You can also test other areas but I will only grant 250 Bytes bounty if a race condition is found.

Please if you find one, DO NOT POST. Instead please send me a PM with the details. I'll need to know the page and action you're doing at least.

Thank you.

The Great Purge Day By [mention=1]
Earlier this week, Omniscient declared "The Great Purge Day," making a bold executive decision to remove a select group of members whom he believes have been damaging his business and driving members away from HackForums. These individuals have been permanently banned, and some have even been completely erased. Omniscient has made it unmistakably clear: cause trouble, and you're out - no exceptions.

Public Convo Closure By [mention=1]
After receiving multiple reports of doxing and harassment in the public conversation room, Omniscient has decided to remove this feature and close the room entirely, stating that the actions of a few have ruined it for the majority. However, Omniscient has mentioned plans to introduce the ability to create private rooms within the conversation feature.

VIP Group Subforums CSS Changes By [mention=1]
Omniscient has implemented updates to the VIP Group Subforums, giving them a customized CSS design that now reflects the unique name colors of each group. This change enhances the visual appeal of the subforums, making it easier to distinguish between the different VIP groups at a glance.

New L33T & UB3R Userbar Design By [mention=1]
As we've highlighted in recent news editions, Omniscient has been implementing various visual changes to give the forum a fresh, updated feel. This week, Omniscient revamped the L33T and UB3R userbars with the assistance of graphic designer Motusora, giving both upgradable user groups a sleek, new look. We think they look fantastic - what do you think? If you're considering upgrading but haven’t already, you can do so here: https://hackforums.net/upgrade.php

Bytes Reward Adjustment By [mention=1]
This week, Omniscient decided to lower the minimum character requirement for posts to just 5. Following this change, Omniscient also determined that it would be more suitable to adjust the byte reward structure. You will now receive 1 byte as a reward for each reply, down from the previous value of 3.

Notable console & hardware releases:

July is a quiet month for major console and hardware releases following the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 in June. The industry's focus remains on software and adoption of Nintendo's new hardware. There are no major console or hardware releases announced for July 2025 at this time.

Nintendo Switch 2 restocks:

Scalpers are still a concern for this console a month later. Released on June 5th, the Switch 2 remains in high demand. Best Buy briefly restocked July 1st in-store, and sold out. U.K. retailers (Amazon, Currys, ShopTo) maintain steadier supply.
Official pricing: $449 base and $499 bundled with Mario Kart World.

Notable News (July 2025)

Call of Duty Remote Code Execution (RCE) exploit

Highly Vulnerable: Call of Duty: WWII (PC)

When the publisher, Activision, was aware of this critical vulnerability, PC servers went completely offline for emergency maintenance.
Timeline of the event:

July 2nd - 4th: This is when the community became aware of the issue. People began posting on Reddit and X warning other users that hackers began opening applications like Notepad and harassing players in-game.
July 5th: Activision's official "Call of Duty Updates" account acknowledged they were investigating "an issue" and took the PC version of the game offline.

A specific vulnerability "CVE-2018-20817" affected several older Call of Duty games as well. Hackers could exploit the game's authentication process, and execute code on your machine remotely.

Historically Vulnerable and Still Considered Unsafe on PC:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Call of Duty: Ghosts
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (on official servers)
Call of Duty: Black Ops III (A patch was released in 2023 by Treyarch. Members of the COD community still advise caution and recommend community patches.)
