MyBB is good as it is open sourced and there is a lot of developers for it but XenForo is a good AIO solution for a forum software as many features you would need plugins for in MyBB are standard in XenForo

I would recommend MyBB due to it being open source and XenForo really isnt worth the price difference.

As someone who is big on customing with features I lean to MyBB. It's unfortunate that not every end sfotware has a modding community within it.

MyBB is fairly old, but I generally like the design of everything as compared to Xenforo with everything looking very sleek and modern.

Looks wise Xenforo, ease of development wise, I'd go for MyBB. As a developer myself, I'd say both are monolithic apps in PHP.
If you really want high performance go for a custom solution in Next.js or Nuxt.js.

So i just tried XenForo and while it look similarly to IPB, i feel more comfortable and IPB feels more flexible than XenForo. So althought i've already been using vBulletin in the past i think imma settle with IPB for now.

Its kinda funny to compare paid vs open-source as most people already mentioned, but to be fair Xenforo is and will always be very nice and smooth! But i would at any time choose an open source solution!
MyBB is quite nice considering all the mods and themes made for it

Since already bumped... I've never really cared for XenForo so I'd probably pick MyBB over it every time. I did, however, used to have a knack for vBulletin back in the day.

If you want features, and default out of the box features without having to even upload a theme yet, XenForo (responsive style out of the box, faster response time overall, more user-friendly UI with elements that appear/disappear vs. requiring a page reload). Obviously a lot of the plugins are also paid only, so you will have to pay more than just for the software itself, which is where MyBB wins (many, many themes are free and same with plugins).

MyBB is completely useless now. It was good software over 10 years ago. It's garbage today, absolute junk. I wouldn't use it or recommend it for a new project.
I am unsure about Xenforo but imho it suffers the same problem of being Legacy Internet (Web 2.0) and what you really want is web 3 shit like NodeJS, API, Mobile and other features you will immediately need without having to buy add-ons or hire a developer.
If HF's MyBB wasn't hyper-developed the past few years I'd probably have to completely ditch it by now. But I don't think I'd go with XF.

Web 3 will apply to majority of IOT eventually.
And mobile usage had been ever increasing ever since smart phones were a thing.

I used MyBB almost 6 years ago on my old forum and I loved it. Very nice, easy and clean.

Might be an unpopular opinion here, but I've tried all of the forum software and I can't part from Invision Power Board. I've played around with converting a large community from IPB to vBulletin and XenForo, developing my own custom themes and plugins to serve the purpose of what the community was for (gaming space) and I still found myself too attracted to IPB. I've been using it for over 10 years now.
But in the question of MyBB vs XenForo, I prefer XenForo. XenForo is modern and beautiful out of the box. Keyword here is modern. It really all comes down to the purpose of the community though.

I'm fairly out of date, so take it with a grain of salt but I agree. IPB has had my heart ever since I gave it a shot back in 2011 or so. It just felt so smooth to customize and use both as a member and an administrator. The last time I touched it was a couple summers ago, after years of doing nothing with forums, and it was such an easy software to step back into.
Similarly, when it comes down to MyBB vs XenForo strictly, gotta go with XenForo in terms of modernization and ease of use.
All of that said, I try to support FOSS solutions for anything and everything I can and in that regard, MyBB wins out. It depends on what the project is, but if privacy is even remotely a factor, I opt into using MyBB.
