Hack Forums News // Edition 309 - Wires - Sep 19, 2016 ![]() ![]() Hack Forums under maintenance On September the 18th our administrator Omniscient announced that he was working on a server which was causing HF to crash multiple times this past week. After a good few hours of researching what was causing the crashes Omniscient discovered that the recent crashes were probably due to a broken SSD drive in the RAID configuration. In the upcoming few days this is most likely going to be fixed by the hosting company. >>Source New Prestige requirement in Counter Strike forum Two days ago Omniscient announced that members are now required to have atleast 25 prestige to post in the Counter Strike forum. This new requirement was added in an attempt to reduce the amount of trolling and LQ posts. If you're upgraded into L33T or UB3R (not 3P1C) this requirement is bypassed. >>Source Site Statistics

It's not everyday the voluntary sectional writers and the On-Call Team get a shout-out for their hard work, so well done guys. On another note, I really need to go to the toilet so I'll end it there... ![]()
Ice Cores from Melting Glaciers Will Be Stored in Antarctica
A unique new project started by scientists from France and Italy is underway. The project titled "Protecting Ice Memory" was started to essentially build a library containing samples from glaciers that are melting. Global warming is to blame for the melting of many impressive glaciers around the world, and this project aims to preserve samples for scientists to study in the future. These scientists are constantly collecting ice cores from almost every glacier on the planet and burying them over thirty feet underground in Antarctica. Ice cores have air bubbles frozen and locked within which can help researchers study how the environment has changed over time. The information from these ice cores could help scientists understand how rapid climate change is affecting the world. Unusual Short Burst of X-Rays Coming from Slowest-Spinning Neutron Star For the longest time NASA had thought they had found the slowest spinning neutron star, but they were wrong. NASA's state of the art observatory named "Swift" has found a new neutron star thanks to an X-ray burst. The X-ray burst was a very strong and rapid burst, which caught the eye of astronomers at the observatory. NASA used a team of astronomers at their "Chandra" observatory to assist in the investigation of the star. This neutron star they discovered rotates only once every six and a half hours, which makes it the slowest spinning star by far ever recorded. Arctic Sea Ice Shrinks to Second-Lowest Low on Record Climate change has negatively affected ice formations around the world for years, but the sea ice around the North Pole has reached its second-lowest on record. Currently the arctic sea ice is tied with the 2007 record. Ice formations around the arctic sea hit their expected low for the year, hitting an area of over four million square kilometers, which is way below the old average of six million square kilometers. The record lowest arctic ice low was in 2012 when the area hit barely three million square kilometers. Shrinking sea ice in the area is a serious problem, which not only speeds up global warming, but also spreads pollution, and threatens Arctic animal species. ![]()
Google Patches Two Critical Bugs in Android
It has been a bad week for millions of Android phone users. Two critical Android vulnerabilities were recently disclosed and patched on Android devices via an over-the-air security update. The first, discovered by Google Project Zero researcher Mark Brand, allows an attacker to remotely execute malware or escalate local privileges on exposed phones. Despite its "straightforward" nature, the bug is "extremely serious" and can be spread in a variety of ways, Brand wrote in a blog post. The same update patches a second vulnerability similar to Stagefright. The bug is exploited by hiding malicious code in embedded JPEG image data, then sending the picture via Gmail or Google Talk. The unsuspecting target does not need to click on or open any links to become compromised. US Consumer Safety Agency Formally Recalls the Note 7 in the US After weeks of investigation, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a formal recall of the Galaxy Note 7 in conjunction with Samsung Thursday. The recall will include about 1 million of the premium mobile phones because of serious fire and burn hazards, CPSC chairman Elliot Kaye said at a press conference. If the phone is included in the recall, which almost all phones sold in the US are, customers can take the phone back to Samsung directly or to their carrier to receive a refund or a replacement phone. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has urged customers to "immediately stop using and power down" the device. Valve Removes All of Digital Homicide's Games From Steam If you write a negative review for a game, is that considered harassment? It is according to indie game developer Digital Homicide whom is suing 100 Steam users for $18 million. The game developer is facing repercussions from Valve after it decided to file a lawsuit against a band of anonymous Steam users. The suit alleges a number of offenses, including cyberbullying, stalking, forming a hate group to harass and disrupt the company's business and products, and so forth. In response to the lawsuit, Valve removed all 18 of the developer's games from their digital storefront. According to Valve, they "stopped doing business with Digital Homicide for being hostile to Steam customers." * - Wires - Sep 19, 2016 ![]() ![]() Bombing in New York City On the night of Saturday, September 17, a bomb detonated at 133 W. 23rd St., between Sixth and Seventh Avenue, which is more commonly known to be the Chelsea neighborhood. There were 29 people who were injured from the bombing itself. Later that night, there was another device found four blocks away on West 27th Street. Thankfully, the device did not destruct and the bomb was safely removed. As of September 19, authorities believe the primary suspect to be 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami. Rahami is now currently in custody after a shootout with police. Harambe Jerseys are now Back for Sale The notorious gorilla that was put down back in May of 2016 has sparked many people's attention over recent months. In case you are not familiar, the gorilla was killed at the Cincinnati Zoo after a child ended up dropping down into the gorilla pit. Many memes have been created to show respect for the gorilla online. However, on September 14, the name "Harambe" was put on the blacklist of names for custom named jerseys. A spokesperson from Fanatics, which works with NFL's online sales, said, “It turns out an employee, in an effort to be vigilant and keep the banned list as current as possible, took it upon themselves to ban the word across our sites. Once we realized the error, we fixed the issue and Harambe is now available again.” Minnesota Mall Attack On Saturday, September 17, there appeared to be yet another terrorist attack. A man, who is now identified as 22-year-old Dahir A. Adan, went on a rampage at a Minnesota Mall. Adan stabbed nine people before an off-duty police officer fatally shot the man. The ISIS wing is now claiming responsibility for this attack. The town in where this attack happened, Saint Cloud, is home to one of Minnesota's largest Muslim immigrant communities. With this in mind, people often tend to make the correlation between Muslim individuals and ISIS. A news conference was held by Muslim and Somali communities to mourn the victims and call for unity. "We are also concerned about the potential backlash," said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations chapter in Minnesota. "We understand in St. Cloud there is more anti-Muslim organizing, and we hope they do not use this incident to divide (our community)." ![]() ![]() View Team (Click to View)

I worked in a retail shop and the amount of people who came in, stalked the isles screaming "over here guys, over here!" just to walk out without buying anything was almost painful. * - Demonstrate - Sep 20, 2016 (Sep 20, 2016 05:59 AM)Wires Wrote: Am I the only one that thought Pokemon Go was annoying asf? Oh yes, it had a very cringey fan-base, but it was also very short-lived. * - Jаson - Sep 21, 2016 I just noticed you spelled kernel wrong. |
