When I ran reaver a few years ago it would stall around 20%, why?

This can occur due to many reasons, including but not limited to low range, and router lockdown, this lockdown happens when you try too many wrong pins, and it can probably be as long as a complete our in some routers

RE: Ran reaver - Rogers Communications - Sep 23, 2020

router lockdown happens about 99% of them

RE: Ran reaver - elitesquad - Sep 23, 2020

what programs are better to avoid this lockout? I've run wireshark before but don't know how to read it.

Capture a handshake or a PMKID. WPS it pretty much deal in 99.9999999999 percent of cases now.

If you want to dumb it down to a program, use wifite.

Otherwise hcxdumptool, bettercap, etc.
