Hi there,
I'm wondering if there is any tricks I can perform to gain a Business paypal account in Australia without having to scrounge around getting an "ABN" (Australian Business Number), which costs a bit I'm pretty sure.

Since I have no real 'business' or the ability to pay for an ABN seeing as I only want to retain the privacy on my full name (which is disclosed to buyers when they make a transaction - even with a premier account), is there any way I can convince them to allow me to upgrade without an ABN, or a way I can create a new account without having to go through that lengthy process to get a business upgrade?

Any advice would be great.

Applying for an ABN is free, its just if you need to register a business when it may cost you a little money(20 to 60 dollars average). There really is no way to get around it due to our GST laws (government state tax), if it is just for PayPal and a small internet business (such as Minecraft) you will only need to apply for it as a sole trader (so basically as a sub contractor) and it shouldn't cost you anything. If you are in a hurry, I would suggest calling the tax office and doing it over the phone, the application can be tricky and it will take longer to receive it via the site.

Adding to what Bugga said;

You need to register for a TFN (Tax file number) which is free. Then, you can apply online for an ABN (Australian business number) as a "sole trader, trading under your name" - which is free, and you don't need a business because you're trading under your name.

TFN is a standard thing 99% of people who have worked or are about to work will have in Australia. You can be 15 and apply for a TFN, ask your school or download a form and mail it back.

Just give them a call it isn't really hard at all. And that is just a no answer.

Yea looks like I'll have to call.
If I answer no it says I'm not entitled since I haven't set up some kind of enterprise. However I have my website and my PayPal autobuy and that's really all I need.
It's just the paypal business name instead of the personal name which is the loose end.
