In this tutorial, I will show you how to use crunch within Kali linux to create simple Wordlists based upon specific charactersets. I personally would recommend using one of the major wordlists available, such as rockyou.txt, Top 500 used passwords, top 10000 used passwords. These pre-made password lists are available within the default installation of Kali linux in "/usr/share/wordlists/". Anyways, let's get started.
Crunch can be specified to different settings depending on the type of Wordlist you want to create, and the amount of storage you have available for storing all of the combinations. Usually the format for using crunch is like this:
Code
Usually when generating a wordlist by crunch you want to be specific in terms of characters, and characterset. This is because the generated output file requires a lot of storage in terms of generating a strong and powerful wordlist.
Code
If you do not specify the characterset it will just create a wordlist with ALL characters available. This will be a very powerful wordlist, that can crack almost any password, but it requires a lot of PETA Bytes for storing such a large wordlist. Anyways, you can now locate your fresh wordlist within your Desktop/wordlists directory, and view the output for yourself. You can change the min, max, and characterset for your specific needs, but a good range to work with for SSH cracking would be 3-6 with no specific charactersets.
PHP Code
<?php
Step 1) Open up a new terminal within Kali linux and change your directory to your Desktop by using this command:
Code
cd Desktop
Step 2) Create a new folder for storing your generated passwords by typing this command within the terminal
Code
mkdir wordlists
Step 3) Access your newly created Wordlist folder by typing this command within the terminal
Code
cd wordlists
Crunch can be specified to different settings depending on the type of Wordlist you want to create, and the amount of storage you have available for storing all of the combinations. Usually the format for using crunch is like this:
Code
Code
crunch <min> <max> -o wordlist.txt
<min> = Minimum amount of characters for each generated combination
<max> = Maximum amount of characters for each generated combination
-o = output
wordlist.txt = The file name and type that will be generated.Usually when generating a wordlist by crunch you want to be specific in terms of characters, and characterset. This is because the generated output file requires a lot of storage in terms of generating a strong and powerful wordlist.
PHP Code
<?php
Step 4) For this tutorial we will create a simple wordlist that contains 3-5 characters, with the characterset abc123. This means that crunch will create a wordlist by using the character 'abc123' but in all possible combinations. We have now specified the minimum and maximum amount of characters, and we have specified our characterset. It will only create a wordlist based upon these charactersets. The command to create this would be:
Code
Code
crunch 3 5 abc123 -o wordlist.txtIf you do not specify the characterset it will just create a wordlist with ALL characters available. This will be a very powerful wordlist, that can crack almost any password, but it requires a lot of PETA Bytes for storing such a large wordlist. Anyways, you can now locate your fresh wordlist within your Desktop/wordlists directory, and view the output for yourself.
