Just follow the basic requirements in your state, that should be the baseline. Some regions like the EU and UK give government certificates on following basic cyber compliance. Your state might include laws on providing disclosure should a vulnerability or breach happen.

Outside of that, people with specialized cybersecurity training like those with CompTIA Security+ and CISSP certs have compliance laws in their curriculum - I suggest getting at least one person with them in your team.

The best way is to hire a professional with a track-record. In case something goes wrong your insurance most likely won't cover it if you did it yourself. Also it might be illegal to handle customer data in a way that does not meet goverment criteria, depending where you live.
