Don't ever use ChatGPT to create script (My personal experience at least)

First of all, I want to say that if this thread doesn't belong here, I'll move it.

So, I've spent around 6 hours total in the last couple of days trying to get chatgpt to help me create a decoder for strings, decoders like base64, hex, url decoder, ACSII/unicorn, and the like. At first I had chatgpt create a simple decoder, so I made a .sh file, pasted the generated code, made it into an executable, bashed it and it gave me line errors. So I copied that and showed it to chatgpt. It then garbles advanced coding talk and then spits out a new revised/fixed script. So I rm the previous .sh and make a new one and paste the fixed script, chmod it, bash it, and it works. I then enter a base64 string to decode and bam, it works.

So I'm like, "Cool! I wonder if there's a way to automatically detect what kind of string is being used and automatically use said tools from before to decode it?" So I ask buddy chatgpt and he's like, "Excellent idea! Here's a code that does just that! Would you like an interactive menu along with that? I can also upgrade the code to...something, something better analyze and decode...something, something."

I think, "Upgrade? Sure! Let's do it!" A few seconds later chatgpt spits out a fresh new script. I make a new .sh, chmod it, bash it, and then i get errors.

Long story short, this whole process repeats multiple times; from fixing errors to upgrades, to new .sh being made, to successful runs to error string decoding, to new and upgraded scripts and then rinse and repeat. Resulting in mass headaches.

If someone has success with chatgpt in creating scripts then hats off to you, I'm still just a newbie and I thought I could get some help from chatgpt and it's quite obvious that for me, taking the shortcut to creating a script without fully knowing what I'm doing is just stupid and lazy.

I am, though, excited at the prospect of creating scripts that are able to execute what I had attempted at or even make a script to do something even more. Honestly I just chose something random to do and I landed on the decoder stuff. I probably won't use chatgpt again though.
You're being put off from ChatGPT because of one hallucinated chat? Detecting the encoding method of a string was probably too complex. Odd that it initially failed on something so basic. I blame your prompt. Did you force it to do character replacement, instead of passing the parameter to base64?

You would have gotten a flawless Python script if you had asked for one, I'm sure. Shell scripting is a limited 'language'.
skills issue, not an Ai issue

Prompt better, and don't judge all of AI/LLM/ML because you failed to make a script using 1 platform. Are you on free or premium?

Free chatgpt.com != all of AI.
There are way more advanced workflows than chatgpt.com.
ChatGPT is extremely useful you shouldn’t be put off by one mistake by it, it was most likely an issue on your end of things

Yeah, definitely a skill issue on my end. I'm just not experienced enough to ask for what I really want in the code, so I guess I shouldn't say "Don't use chatgpt..." I understand that persistence is key and maybe I shouldn't be put off on this experience with chatgpt. I'll admit I'm being ignorant. I'll keep trying with chatgpt and yes, I'm only on the free version. When my finances are looking better, I'll definitely invest on pro.

Also just to add, because I was too tired to type this part last night:

I did have a working script that did decode various strings but there were some decoding that came out garbled because I think the script didn't run the next decoder or something, I can't remember. The interactive menu looked nice, simple but nice. The earlier script had the following options:

1. Automatic Decode (Recursive)
2. Manual
3. Theme
4. Exit

Manual just listed the aforesaid decoders, ASCII, ARM64, etc. Theme was any plugins I had chatgpt make, like green text, etc. At some point I think I switched over to .py

I was also working with Nethunter on termux so I was very limited on what I could ask chatgpt to do. I'm planning on getting a rapsberrypi to get the full linux capabilities and just for beginner purposes.

If someone could point me in the direction to less limitations and more capabilities, I would love to hear them.

Also, I do still have the last script I had chatgpt make, only I never ran the script because I got too frustrated. There might be errors, I'm not sure so yeah. I believe this was the .py script, I'm not entirely sure. I'll reply the code in the next one, if anyone is interested.

I'll pastebin it later, I'm at work so.

Alright, had a quick break, here's the script. It's an installer script and I believe the entire script is like 1000 lines long?

Usually for coding/scripting/developing requests I try to provide context and have the agent optimize it before I actually making the request even with simple questions, maybe on your case you could start with:
Describe the most used encoding operations?
Can these operations be performed for bash on OS something?
How would you implement it in bash with a menu?

Then when you are comfortable with the context it has you can request for the actual script.

As for buying something, if your main goal is development, I would say it is better to purchase a coding agent. I personally prefer GitHub copilot in terms of price to value (first month is also free)
Bonsoir frère, quelle sont alors les méthodes de travail avancé qu'on doit utiliser ?

Good evening, my brother, how are you? Do you remember me, your friend from Africa? My brother, do you remember you sent me money in Bitcoin? I will always be grateful. Write to me as soon as you receive my message; I no longer have your Telegram.

J'ai pas réussir a configuré RAT sur termux a partir de mon téléphone, avec les commandes que chatgtp ma envoyé
