You need a large amount of capital to start doing this either a loan or high limit credit card if you don't have the cash on hand then you simply buy out inventories of new popular releases and if people want them they either have to pay resale price not retail since the bots copped all retail priced ones or hope more get manufactured, you're pretty much banking off the fact limited amounts get manufactured seasonally and some releases are a one time thing for years to come but the main bar of entry for the resell field is capital(at least 15-25k) which only a few can afford. It's kind of a dickish move in a way when doing resale because you're pretty much using a bot to buy up everything for retail price then doing a mark up thats literally all it is but it's supply and demand, if someone wants it bad enough they will pay for it.

EDIT: This is the one thing people fail to mention, yes you need investment for the bot and proxies but you also need thousands of dollars to load the bot up so you can buy out the inventory via automation, you can't buy shoes with just a bot with 0 dollars to your name, but thats pretty much common sense.

Keep in mind that using a bot doesn't secure you a cop every time, it just increases your chances. So many people piss off developers complaining that it doesn't work because they didn't cop an item.
