What do you want out of an Operating System?

What do you want out of an Operating System?

Like what does it need to have in order for you to try it out? Or give it a try?

Are you open to new Operating Systems or do you just stick to windows, Mac OS ..etc. Or linux or Unix systems?

Reliability, long term updates, security, wide range of support with software.

Only 2 that really check those marks is Windows and Mac but arguably Windows has been becoming more and more buggy and security is not as good as Mac.

I have been a life long Windows user and have strongly been considering the new Mac Mini.
Security is my main concern, I'm always worried about someone stealing my computers, if they access your data it can be bad.

I've been a Windows user for a long time, then I switched to Linux few years ago. I couldn't go back to Windows, especially with Windows 11 with is full of bloatware and telemetry. For my Linux systems, I need :
- something reliable
- long term support

I don't care if it's not easy to use, I see this as a way to improve my knowledge and skills, I'm currently using Fedora, sometimes I miss Ubuntu (I was a Ubuntu user at the beginning but had many issues when I tried to upgrade from 23.10 to 24.04, I switched to Fedora at this moment) because of the .deb packages. I can't deny that .deb packages are more popular than .rpm, and sometimes Alien doesn't work, but there is always a way to make something working on Linux, and it's always an opportunity to learn new things.

I used to be a Gnome user because it was simple, however I switched to KDE because there are many options for the customization, and the apps such as Konsole, Kwrite, and so on are also enhanced compared to Gnome apps.

Depends on the application. For utmost security, tails is the way to go IMO.
For my personal PCs, and most of the ones I interact with, I choose windows for ease of use for my family and no needing to wrestle with it for gaming purposes.

Finally, for workloads, or craptops, I usually use Ubuntu. For example, my media server runs ubuntu, and old old laptops I decide to use for whatever get mint.
