If it weren't for Microsoft... IBM would have contracted with another small software house to write the operating system for its new Personal Computer. Big Deal.
If Microsoft hadn't come up with Windows... Well, the first graphical user interfaces were devised at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). (Apple didn't invent those, either.) We still would have wound up with GUIs.
Microsoft was late to the Internet game, too. Remember Netscape?
Lots of word processors and typesetting programs came out before Word.
If they weren't invented let's be honest here we wouldn't even have internet not just for computers, phones, and all kinds of technology.
Back in the 1970's there were so many different computer comapanies, NeXt from IBM which disappeared just as quick as it arrived. If however Bill Gates didn't buy the DOS software that he renamed then chances are IBM would have bought it. Or Apple might have had the majority.
