I find that for desktop development, Java and/or C# are great languages to start with. Java and C# expose the OOP model which is one of the most useful things you'll learn in any language that supports OOP. Java and C# are purely OO. They're also pretty similar in terms of basic syntax. Java, right now, is probably the best suited for cross platform [high level] development but I reckon C# will be perfected on multiple platforms - right now it's mostly stable but I still run into problems. You could also go down the modern route of learning JavaScript and using something like Electron to develop cross platform applications.
You could then try out C/C++ since I find that it's great to have knowledge of at-least one lower-level language.
If you're wanting to do web development then go ahead and learn the front-end languages a bit and then go for PHP and Node.JS or even Ruby or Python too.
Give us an idea of what you'd like to make and we can suggest more suited languages and provide reasons for each.
