How to change default installation path for programs?

Hey guys, I was wondering how I change the default installation path for programs without changing the paths of my existing programs. I went into regedit went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \\ SOFTWARE \\ Microsoft \\ Windows \\ CurrentVersion then I found the ProgramFilesDir and ProgramFilesDir (x86) and changed them to my D: drive instead of my C: drive and then restarted my computer. Now all my programs that are installed on my C drive try to open from the D drive. Eg, when opening Google Chrome it will give me an error saying "Can't find in D:\\Program Files (x86)\\Google\\Chrome" when I originally installed it on the C drive... same thing with every program on my C drive. How can I change the default path for future installations of programs, but not break all my existing ones? Thanks :)

Almost all programs give you option to select installation folder you should not mess with Windows default installation path or you will get errors you getting.
