EDIT feature Limited

*Sighs* Like always the few ruin it for everyone, again.

I knew it was only a matter of time before something like this happened, pretty sure most users saw this one coming.

Unfortunately this is gonna cause a lot of users who try to keep master tutorial threads and other type of posts (tools, etc) updated with new/latest content quite a bit of frustration.

Yep, this limitation has an impact on all content - not just the marketplace.
Quote:What will be the solution for marketplace seller changes in price/terms/whatever? Close the old thread and create a new one? Is it allowed?

Yes, that's fine. We suggest you close the old thread and wait 24 hours before starting a new thread.

I assume in the Marketplace there might be sellers who choose to start new threads more frequently in order to ensure they can edit their first post. I think that's fine. 90 days is a fairly reasonable time imho.

What I may end up doing is giving R3kt and Mentor members a much longer edit period too.

Quote:I have a few threads saying 'Method Working As Of October' which will not be good for sales in a few months.

But you hurt SEO that way. If you constantly edit a thread then Google continues to update the page and whatever content was on your page gets updated in results. For SEO you're better off creating a new thread each month so the content has time to rank.

Quote:but at times these solutions really do feel more harmful to the community than simply dealing with reports when they come in

By the time the person is reported the content damage is done.

Quote:People host images of threads and change the picture with the new contact. It's not hard and undetectable.

And I'm 100% good with that. It doesn't effect SEO negatively.

Quote:Not only will they attempt to circumvent them, but most people abusing this anyways are doing it to sales threads they made only a few days prior, so these sort of restrictions won't really affect them.

They aren't causing the most harm. It's actually outside of the Marketplace where there could be a long thread and the content is edited years later by a member who wants to remove their footprint or change their reputation by having a fresh start. It's damaging to our site SEO rankings when that content is deleted or altered to be gibberish.

Imagine you're on Google and you search for something like "PHP code solution" and you go to HF, you have to register, activate your email, then you see the thread and the first post is "CONTENT DELETED / CLOSED". You think we keep that member?

Seems like the only issue is with marketplace thread's or tutorials etc. Omni could have allowed ub3rs to edit threads once in a week, for l33ts once in a month and for regulars once in 3 months.

But then again I can see people abusing it for deleting whole contents from their thread's.
Pretty good that it's allowed by editing the actual image on the host. Fixes the SEO problem and you get to 'edit' your important details.
Thanks

Thanks

But with image based thread's will there be any text for SEO? I don't think Googlebots can read image contents.

Looks like we just got a solution to the main problems members have with this new restriction. Aside from that I don't think this restriction will give a lot of issues.
Great work.

Nope lol - but hey omni allows it so let's stop bitching and accept it.

Yeah of course it's better than all other options.
Good luck with your new thread hosting services :D

Oh by the way, what if, image host goes down let's say after 1 year or so?
thats so fucking stupid.

small minority versus the whole, the whole takes the hit.

Sadly, this is how life works. Only takes a few rotten apples to ruin the create. Like previously seen with the junk feature, etc.
Aw man this really stinks :/ (Thanks everyone who ruined it -_-)

I just like sticking to one thread because I have OCD

Give "Important Threads" aka Stickies ability to edit. I genuinely doubt anyone is dumb enough to pay for a sticky to trash his content, and even if he does, you'll have full control over it. E.g one pays and trashes it, you keep the money and ban him. I know it's not about money however it will make no sense if one has to close/open new thread every 3 months to put up "this is still working ; date " ... In a competing marketplace, you edit things all day long, the least you can do for us is ability to edit stickied threads, I know I'm probably fighting for lost cause but just consider it.

So you think sale threads should be able to have the ability if they pay? Isn't that a bit unfair, why not just remove the ability to edit for ANYONE who abused thread edits? Feel that's more fair.

By the time it’s reported the damage is already done. It’s about preventing the thread edit abuse, not punishing them afterward.
