Jailbreak freak - New award

adam should get it.

Question though, Jailbreak implies Iphone/Sony, Android is Rooting.

Why wouldnt it be Phreaking?
My point, I guess, is that you can be that person. Everyone has a dark moon, be the astronaut. You have the potential to be a greater person than you might possibly imagine.

Hopefully this will get more people to talk about smart phones on here and get some more shit like that released on here :)

People who know the differences between rooting and jailbreaking may have this pet peeve but it's just a common term people use to describe modifying the phone's OS. An example would be referring GNU/Linux as Linux. Technically speaking Linux is just a kernel. That is why a lot of people call it GNU/Linux and if they are specifically talking about the Linux kernel, they'll say "Linux kernel".

A bit confusing at the least.

I believe, because he's referring to one section. The Android section has half the posts/threads than the iOS section, which would be even HARDER to try to gain traffic towards it.

Edit: Sorry, just took some NyQuil. Didn't read that correctly. Disregard that entirely. :O
Adam or Grin definitely deserve the award.
I like this, there needs to be more non-donation awards imho.

Edit - more awards that focus on skill*

Gaining root access is rooting, no matter the device.
Jailbreaking is just a term for removing all restrictions, sandbox, code signing, and whatever user-land restrictions.

Phreaking is more so the network.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Phreaking was considered any modificaton of a device before the Internet was around.

E.G: 'Black Boxes'. People used these home-made devices to tap into Phone booths to get internet.
Making your own ROM for an Android phone, or unauthorised apps for iDevices can also be counted in a sense.

Changing the IMIE or doing SIM modifications also counts.

Also; yes I was just being picky between the names for Jailbreak/Root, however I think that Phreaking would cover it more.

The award (to me) seems like it's promoting people to break software, where what I think Omni wants is to expand HF to the Mobile devices as well, and modify them in new and creative ways, as that is what a hacker is.
Someone who changes something for themselves.

That, to me, is Phreaking, not jailbreaking.

Jailbreaking is bypassing the DRM to allow software to be executed. Therefore allowing tweaks to the system itself. To be a bit more technical to the people who are savy, it could be refer to the process of modifying the kernel. (in this case the modified FreeBSD kernel...) Rooting is similar but rooting isn't jailbreaking technically speaking. Both terms are very similar but you can actually legally obtain root via the manufacturer. Therefore you're not really breaking anything. Rooting and jailbreak also separate Android and iOS.

Sure both phones share vulnerabilities but it is possible to gain root access in a legal manner unlike with iOS where Apple restricts the user regardless.

Phreaking is more of the telecommunication part. John Draper started the whole "phreaking" phase. He's been considered one of the original "hackers" too.

So... is xadamx going to be the first one with the award, or Grin?

Why not both ? ✌ Mexican music and cheers

My era of providing technical support and malware removal on HackForums is over, so you can stop PM'ing me about it. Sorry.
They didn't have access to the Internet, so they made something on their own from something that exists already, and modified it to suit their need..

I guess it's what Omni wants us to do with the threads. Does he want it to be software cracking/open-sourcing, or does he want it to be general modification of all aspects.

Phreaking Cells Mobiles and PDA's
Phreaking has been around for decades. Learn to hack cellular phones, unlock cells, call tracing, and do reverse phone lookups. All mobile hacking discussion belongs here.

I would think mobile security and the whole general aspect of the devices. - It's mainly a mobile section award.

That's the bit I'm trying to clarify Thunder.

At the moment it seems like it's only OS-based modifications from the name of the award and the description, but there could be more opportunity and modifications if it was for more than just the OS.

@Bitmoney, I have about average experience with Phreaking or Jailbreaking, so I'm not whoring, I'm trying to figure out the thing which Omni wants us to do to obtain the award, for others.

I think Adam should be studying and not going for the new award...

Anyways, I don't think Omni is going to hand out this award for at least a week or so. This way, activity increases, and more people will be competing to be the first to acquire the award.
