Honestly? It's mainly about evaluating yourself and deciding whether or not you see yourself as a good fit for the group. From there it's all about communicating to the leadership, be it through your actions or an application or even just a discussion, how/why you're a good fit for the group. If there's a group that looks cool but you don't necessarily see yourself fitting in very well with then I'd say it's not worth it to pursue membership.

Look at my profile, I am a L33T, I am in groups as well. L33T's can only apply trough CP though, to prevent LQ spams on a recruitment thread.
