EDIT feature Limited

(Oct 19, 2017 03:20 PM)Bαker Wrote:  So you think sale threads should be able to have the ability if they pay? Isn't that a bit unfair, why not just remove the ability to edit for ANYONE who abused thread edits? Feel that's more fair.

Is it unfair regulars cant do as much as ub3rs can? You can beat the bush all night long lol, thing is, if thread is a sales thread, and it's stickied, yes, consider giving it ability to run sales thread without having to host shit and keep thread organized and let everyone be able to see posts/feedback whatever there is to it, in ONE thread.

I'm yet to see stickied thread with edit abuse? None with a common sense does that hence it's a proposition, taken or denied, it's put up and we'll await the reply regardless of the outcome, it's just a flying thought.

Agree with that, but just like with Github it shows a edit difference, omni could make a plug say if 50% of the thread is changed it notifies staff. Yes after the edit, but will be more pro-active. A lot of different ways to approach it honestly.

But then again I can see people abusing it for deleting whole contents from their thread's.

Yea I mean not complaining, just pointing out that when the day comes I want to update my content in an old thread I am now going to have to close it off and make an entirely new thread.
Its understandable that this was imposed, I mean look at what DamienVC did to get closed, he wiped like 3/4 of his content on the forums in a single shot.

I can see us having a lot of (near) duplicate threads in the future that is for sure. lol
Ehh I don't like the solution but there is no other way to really deal with it so w/e.

Would there be a way that a member could request permission for a certain thread to update it and a staff member can accept or deny it?

Agree. Thread images also don't get scanned for text which also hurts SEO like you stated before but it's allowed. I'm not gonna complain about it, I'll be happy to update my thread like that but it makes the thread have 0,00 SEO value.

I think it's fine if Omni is allowing that but the issue right now is, what if image host/service goes down after a year. User won't be able to update new link after 1 year on his thread. The only option I can think for this issue is either he can start a new thread and leave old one as it as (blank) or he can pm staff to change the image link.

Actually working on a solution for this now, considering starting an image site with this type of ability. Site hosting is cheap, + I own a CPanel that hosts all my sites already and many VPS's. Just need to find someone better with backend coding than me.
Is there a way you could make it so it's a cool down? Like where you can edit the thread again after 30 days for Ub3r, 40 for L33T, 50 for Regular? I see it working like the Reputation System, you can do a few edits once a thread is created, but once you reach a limit there is a cool down from then on. I'd say only 2 edits in case somebody screws up when making the thread.

Would most likely require a custom plugin I'm guessing though I don't know very much about current plugins or MyBB settings.

And when/if it goes down? You're gonna create 2+ days of work for every single user on your image hosting site. I have no idea if I'm going to wake up tommorow morning and you're throwing plans in as if it will last forever, nhf though, it's just it's not realiable at all. I'd rather rely on HF, if it goes down, shit, my threads go down as well, I can cope with that, but if site that hosts my shit on HF goes down, I'm down as well.

I dont see a point, I just dont. And the worst of all, if EVERYONE starts using your image hosting site, what's with SEO in that case? Last time I checked, it cant scan images for text? Essentially HF will become image hosting site lol.

He already said he with take the SEO Hit, and no I won't create work for people all they need to do is upload an image then re-upload the image when its ready to be changed.
Oof, thats really going to cripple any old tutorials that need to be updated or just older info threads. Its definitely going to fuck with sales threads a bit too, especially
older ones. Sad this had to happen.

My thoughts exactly...

Say I have a sales thread which I update regularly. Should I just be posting new ones every 90 days now to continue to update?

I meant in case your site goes down, none can guarantee you wont just ditch it a month or a year from now on. That's where unnecessary work comes in place.

I can see how effective it is for people who make tutorials etc. But for a sales thread, it just wont work, you make changes on the go, be it mobile phone, PC, whatever, if one has to go through hassle of photoshop, upload, re-upload, change, download, whatever, it's nonsense. This feature is great for those that abused it to hide their identity or whatever, but it's utterly stupid for sales threads and will lower sales for EVERYONE, if you cant have one thread and make updates to it, there's no point in running one either. What about feedbacks, posts, reviews, you're gonna have to dig through threads 2 days to quote everything and then re-open threads, then have questions from newbs like "where are feedback blabla", I'm almost 100% positive every seller on this site will agree, or they are afraid to agree with the fact this will ruin sales on HackForums marketplace.

As I said, very little "marketplace" based threads were edit abused and I believe Omni pointed that out as well. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep, that's what Omni said few pages ago.

He already answered your question..
Backup the edits/access the content from backups. "Freeze" them when they meet certain criteria (every behavior has a pattern, more or less) then involve a part of the community (some highly proven reputable members - I'm sure volunteers will come up) and have them weigh in on the massive changes/edits that fit certain criterias. They flag that, undo the harmful edit and restore the previous version from the backup then get rid of the problem entirely (the user. user by user)
You already have an idea on most of the patterns, wouldn't take much to come up with a script to include them and trigger the process.

You either pay for more help or you get a part of the community involved and helping out, no other way to tackle problems like this on a huge community. Certainly not with restrictions and feature removals, does more damage in the long run.

Anyway, just a thought. Feel free to ignore me if you feel it's nonsense and good luck with it :)
