In case you haven’t heard — on the afternoon of April 1st, my BTC and LTC Electrum wallets were drained. Looks like someone got their April Fool’s joke at my expense.
I’m still in the process of setting up an entirely new system, and while some parts take time (like transferring massive files), I’m able to pop in and make some posts or join Convo. However, I’m not fully operational yet — most of my tools aren't set up, so real work is still on hold.
I believe the Electrum wallets were compromised because the wallet seeds were exposed. I didn’t have passwords on those wallet files. Yeah, I know — lazy. But these were active daily wallets with funds constantly flowing in and out, and for the sake of speed and convenience, I left them unprotected. That’s likely how the attacker got the keys.
Thankfully, my Exodus wallet was password-protected and untouched. I also keep serious funds in cold storage, which wasn’t affected.
I suspect the initial breach came through Chrome and one of my web3 wallets. That afternoon, I noticed weird behavior — Chrome kept redirecting to a MetaMask-related site, probably trying to trick me into entering a password. That was a big red flag.
The total loss was about $700 in BTC and LTC, plus another $1,000 I had to drop on a new PC — though I was probably due for a new one this year anyway.
Going forward, I’m shifting to a more secure setup using virtual machines (via VirtualBox). I’ve tinkered with VMs before but never used them as a production setup. The plan now is to isolate all crypto activity within a dedicated, locked-down environment and keep development work in a separate one. It’ll complicate things a bit, but the added security is worth the trade-off.
I can’t say for sure if it was a RAT or just malware with a wallet-draining payload. Either way, that old system is done. I backed up and double-scanned all files with multiple antivirus tools. I believe I acted quickly enough to limit the damage — was cautious with the screen and clipboard, and took the computer offline immediately. I've since been working from my laptop.
I don’t believe HF was compromised — there’s no evidence to suggest that — but as always, there’s no 100% guarantee. While my old system stored backups and access credentials, those were inside encrypted, password-protected files and folders. I’ve seen nothing to suggest this was more than a typical wallet drainer looking for easy pickings. My guess? I’m just one of thousands randomly infected.
Still, the “just in case” factor looms large, so once I have my new setup fully functional, I’ll begin rotating credentials across the board. Rebuilding a work environment I’ve curated over the past 12 years takes time — especially now that I’m moving into a Linux-based VM setup, which adds its own learning curve.
But so far, so good.
Thank you.

Because seemingly we're facing a few people Doxxing and Harassing other members I have to spell it out.
You do it, you get closed.
ZERO FUCKING TOLERANCE. This has always been so on HF.
So keep up the bullshit and watch the accounts get massacred. If you're a group owner and you're not keeping your people in check, prepare for your group to get deleted.
Stop fucking around. I don't want another contact about this issue or else I just go full-ape and do what I do best.
If you're being harassed, send me on-site evidence that I can confirm and you can expect quick action. If it's off-site, I can't confirm or control what goes on away from HF. This is why I discourage you from using external communications with other members. Keep yourself private and on-site.
Thread closed because I don't want no bullshit replies.

is it just me or HF's notification tab is not working at least on firefox because that's what i use to access HF. every time i navigate to a new page i see 1 unread notification indicator and when i click it, its just stuck on loading. checking the network tab i see there is a socket disconnect which i believe must be the reason why this is happening. HF devs this one's for you
