Cromartie Koukou ![]() Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL): Quote:Takashi Kamiyama is your typical mild-mannered high school student—polite, aloof, and pacifistic, with a slightly above-average IQ. But would your average high school student really enroll himself at the infamous Cromartie High School, known as a breeding ground for the toughest delinquents out there? Eps: 26 Studio: Production I.G Genre(s): Comedy, School, Shounen Aired: Oct 3, 2003 - Mar 26, 2004 Sub/Dub: Both decent and done well Similar anime: Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Detroit Metal City, Gintama, Sakamoto desu ga? MAL What does Freddie Mercury, a gorilla, a robot, a horse, and a hoodlum of 16 year-olds have in common? They apparently are all in the same high school. Cromartie High School takes us on a comedic "slice-of-life?" journey through the lens of its delinquent students. The anime performs well with its witty humor, references to other anime/culture, and a fresh take on the school genre. The story is moment by moment/day by day and entirely impromptu. The animation is relatively decent with some changes in style depending on context, and the sound is nice with a catchy but relaxing OP and overall good VAs. The characters are well done with such a large cast, having a good amount of screen time and maintaining quality traits and relationship dynamics with each other. Even better, each episode is 12 minutes long which makes binging this anime an easy task for those with a few hours to spare Overall, if you're looking for a nice comedic anime full of absurdity and randomness but a wonderful cast then I recommend this anime to you. ;) Be sure to use our Anime Discussion Hub for any previous threads regarding anime or if you are ever looking for new anime to add to your lists! ![]() 20th Century Boys ![]() Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL): Quote:As the 20th century approaches its end, people all over the world are anxious that the world is changing. And probably not for the better. Chapters: 249 Volumes: 22 Author(s): Naoki Urasawa Published: Sep 27, 1999 - Apr 24, 2006 Genre(s): Mystery, Drama, Historical, Sci-Fi, Psychological, Seinen Similar Manga: Monster, Oyasumi Punpun, Billy Bat, Pluto MAL As children, we tend to expand our imaginative horizons far beyond the limits of practicality for the sake of novelty within our youthful selves. Secrets, forts, adventures, and friendship follow fondly on this innocent path that slowly deteriorates as the crushing weight of reality sinks in. The past becomes nothing more than a faded memory; monotony is your only friend in the cruel working world of dead-end jobs in the big city. Yet this all changes for our main character upon the death of his friend and the rise in the cult with symbolism only relevant to himself and his group of childhood friends. 20th Century Boys, written and drawn by Monster's Naoki Urasawa, takes us into a layered story full of mystique, intelligence, and full throttle into the belly of the beast. Characteristic of an Urasawa story, every move, character, and plot point is precisely calculated to deliver a fascinating thriller with well drawn pages. Key to the overall effect of the manga is the character development, which is done very well and I do give Urasawa credit for being one of the few mangaka capable of repeatedly doing so. If you're looking for a nice thriller manga, with wonderful attention to detail and an exciting plot, then I recommend this for you. ;) ![]() Hibike! Euphonium ![]() {Synopsis} After swearing off music due to an incident at the middle school regional brass band competition, euphonist Kumiko Oumae enters high school hoping for a fresh start. As fate would have it, she ends up being surrounded by people with interest in the high school brass band. Kumiko finds the motivation she needs to make music once more with the help of her bandmates, some of whom are new like novice tubist Hazuki Katou; veteran contrabassist Sapphire Kawashima; and band vice president and fellow euphonist Asuka Tanaka. Others are old friends, like Kumiko's childhood friend and hornist-turned-trombonist Shuuichi Tsukamoto, and trumpeter and bandmate from middle school, Reina Kousaka. However, in the band itself, chaos reigns supreme. Despite their intention to qualify for the national band competition, as they currently are, just competing in the local festival will be a challenge—unless the new band advisor Noboru Taki does something about it. From the studio that animated Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, Kyoto Animation's Hibike! Euphonium is a fresh and musical take on the slice-of-life staple that is the high school student's struggle to deal with their past, find romance, and realize their dreams and aspirations. Source: MAL {Personal Opinion} Oh my god. This show was amazing. The combined elements of music and romance, arguably the 2 most beautiful things in the world, allowed the show to capture the heart of all its viewers. {The Story} As a Slice of Life anime, Hibike! Euphonium places us in the shoes of Kimiko Oumae, the first year at Kitauji High School. Kumiko Oumae joins Kitauji High School's Wind Ensemble, which had a terrible falling out the previous year. There she met her childhood friends Shuuichi, and her bandmate from middle school Reina. Through hardship and dramas, they worked to assert Reina's dream of becoming special and won Gold as their first step towards the Nationals. {The Characters} Kumiko is not your typical anime protagonist. She was very average, she wasn't particularly good at the Euphonium compared to others (like Asuka-senpai), nor is she particularly motivated. Her sentiments rarely come out, and her voice almost always dripped with disinterest. Reina is different. Quiet but intense, she and her beautiful trumpet transcend all others. Her self-interest wasn't something one would be repulsed by; it was a form of beauty by itself. Her delightful personality and look are shown in every single scene where she is, and she is the embodiment of perfection. {Soundtrack} As an anime focused around music, the soundtrack is certainly amazing. From the inexperience of a beginning player to the passion and skills of someone whose dream is to reach the Nationals and become someone special, the music shown is never dry and is always beautiful, quivering with emotions. Although I would've preferred if the OP and ED were a bit more classical, as the anime revolves around an orchestra after all. {Visual appeal} I usually don't have this section, but I just need to add it because the art of the show is soooooo beautiful and heart moving. From the moments of tear to the moments of love and even the awkward moments, the animation itself is enough to move you. {Overall} Amazing anime. 10/10 for art, character development, soundtrack, and story. A slice-of-life anime meant for everyone. * - DerMensch24 - Oct 17, 2017 ![]() Anime OP of the Week This week, I decided to choose my favorite OP from my favorite show. My choice is Eureka 7 OP 4, "Sakura" by NIRGILIS Anime ED of the Week The ED this week is from a show that a lot of people seem to miss or not recommend nowadays. Ending for a show called NANA, ED 2, song named "Kuroi Namida" by Anna inspi' Nana. Honorary Mention The anime FLCL has amazing music. Within that music, there includes a band called The Pillows. Formed in 1989, as of 2017 they have 20 studio albums. Even with their track record, they are still relatively unknown. Here is their song "Patricia". * - DerMensch24 - Oct 17, 2017 ![]()
