AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across the Blue Switch Game's Video Reveals March 29 Release Date

The official YouTube channel of the game brand sprite began streaming a promotional video for the Nintendo Switch version of "AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across the Blue" (Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm) visual novel on 10/6/17. The video reveals that the game will ship on March 29. The game was initially supposed to come out this Winter but instead has been pushed back to Spring 2018.

The limited edition will bundle an 80-page visual fan book, character song CD, and drama CD for $86 USD. The regular physical edition will cost $60, and a digital version will also be available, but the price has yet to be determined.

The game's story is set on an archipelago of four islands far south of Japan or even the South Seas. It is all but a different world from modern Japan. From the discovery of anti-gravitons came the dream invention of anti-graviton shoes ("grash") that let people fly the skies. They introduce people to a new realm by enabling flight with just one's body strength, without feathers or engines. This led to the rise of the sport of "Flying Circus" (dogfight race).

The protagonist who once hoped for a future in this sport suffered a setback due to an overwhelming defeat and withdrew from the sport for this and some other reason. However, he met the transfer student Haruka Kurashina, and in teaching her to fly the skies, the old passion returned. He takes part in the Flying Circus again. >> Source

Japanese Overwork and Why It Happens

This week on "Getting to know Japanese Culture," I decided to tackle a more serious issue in Japanese Culture; Japanese overwork and why people might be working themselves to the death. First and foremost, I think it's important to note some of the facts surrounding the issue; to paint the picture of how serious this really is in Japan's current society.

Staff at 12% of Japanese corporations put in more than 100 hours of overtime every month. Expanding upon that, staff at 23% of Japanese corporations put in more than 80 hours of overtime every month. True figures may actually be worse than this; of the 10,000 companies the Japanese government invited to participate, only 1,743 actually did so.

In the 2015 fiscal year, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare recognized 93 suicides and attempted suicides as having been caused by overwork. If we expand upon that to include all suicides white indicate problems related to work were to blame, the number jumps to 2,159. Comparatively speaking, the issue has gotten much worse over the years. 1,456 cases related to "Karoshi" were filed in the year leading up to April 2015; this is only 120 less than the amount of cases filed relating to karoshi between the years of 2004 and 2008.

"Karoshi (過労死)," for those who don't know, can be translated literally to "overwork death," and is the Japanese term for those who die or commit suicide do to overwork.

Hiroshi Kawahito, president of the Tokyo-based Kawahito Law Office and head of the National Defense Counsel for Victims of Karoshi, has much to say on the issue.

Quote:“We can see many reasons why the problem is becoming more acute, but the single largest reason is the excessive sense of competition in society here━In the years since Japan’s economic bubble burst, in the early 1990s, the nation’s economy has been stagnant and companies have had to reduce their costs━For many, the easiest way to do this is by cutting their numbers of full-time, salaried employees and replacing them with workers on temporary contracts.”

As a result of this, salaried workers are put under the pressure of working both harder and more hours just to safeguard their positions. In recent decades, unpaid overtime as well as shorter holidays have sadly become the norm. The Japanese government is, at the very least, beginning to recognize that there is actually a problem. In 2015, the government investigated more than 2,362 complaints, and issued warnings or punishments in 60% of those cases.

Unfortunately, with less younger people entering the workplace, companies will continue to cut costs, inevitably furthering the increase in karoshi cases. There is some hope, though, as the issue has recently been brought back to the forefront of discussion with the death of Miwa Sado; a 31-year-old journalist who was working at NHK. Apparently, she had logged more than 159 hours of overtime with only two days off in the month leading up to her death.

One of the main reasons progress in remedying this is so slow, is the fact that it takes the Japanese government so long to investigate these cases. Sado's death happened way back in July 2013, but only just last week resurfaced, as the government finally pronounced it as karoshi.

With Japanese overwork back in the public light, pressure on Japanese authorities to address the large number of deaths attributed to the punishingly long hours expected of many employees, is expected to increase.

Last Exile

Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL):
Quote:In the world of Prester, flight is the dominant mode of transportation, made possible by Claudia Fluid: a liquidized form of the crystals that are produced on the planet. An organization known solely as "the Guild" has absolute authority over the skies, with a monopoly on the engines that make use of this fluid. Moreover, as ecological disasters destabilize the warring countries of Anatoray and Disith, the Guild also arbitrates in the disputes between the two. Caught in the middle of the conflict are Sky Couriers, piloting small, two-person vanships that fly freely through the sky.

Last Exile follows the adventures of two teenagers who dream of surpassing their parents: Claus Valca, son of a famous vanship pilot, and Lavie Head, Claus' best friend and navigator. Their job as couriers entails passing through an air current called the Grand Stream that separates the hostile nations, which even standard airships struggle to survive. However, when they take on a high-rated delivery to bring an orphan girl named Alvis Hamilton to the battleship Silvana, they get dragged into a much greater conflict that pits them against the might of the Guild.

MAL

Made in celebration of Gonzo's 10th anniversary as a studio, this is among one of their better anime productions. The story unfolds through the eyes of its two main characters who are simple delivery carriers, however end up embroiled in a conflict with more and more layers as the series progresses. The art and music are notable for this series, with a pleasant soundtrack, however I do feel that the OP was a bit odd and out of place. The art is remarkable, with great steam-punk designs and crafting a beautiful setting for the story to progress.

The characters do make the anime great however. Each of them, including the side cast, is able to develop over the course of the series while still maintaining their characteristics. It is a nice balance for an anime, however given that it was a 10th anniversary event it can be reasoned that extra effort was given. I do recommend this for anyone seeking a nice steam-punk anime with an interesting adventure story behind it. ;)

Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria

Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL):
Quote:Kazuki Hoshino values his everyday life above all else. He spends the days carefree with his friends at school, until the uneventful bliss suddenly comes to a halt with the transfer of the aloof beauty Aya Otonashi into his class and her cold, dramatic statement to him immediately upon arrival:

"I'm here to break you. This is my 13,118th school transfer, and even I can't help but reach the end of my tether after so many iterations. So for a change of pace, I'll declare war this time."

And with those puzzling words, the ordinary days that Kazuki loved so dearly become a cycle of turmoil and fear—Aya's sudden appearance signals the unraveling of unseen mysteries surrounding Kazuki's seemingly normal friends, including the discovery of mysterious devices known as "boxes."

Chapters: 40
Volumes: 7
Author(s): Eiji Mikage (Story), Tetsuo (Art)
Published: Jan 10, 2009 - Jun 10, 2015
Genre(s): Action, Mystery, Drama, Horror, Romance, School, Supernatural, Psychological, Thriller
MAL

Also known as HakoMari for short, this is a chaotic but interesting choice of a light novel. The manga touches upon several different themes from romance to psychological thriller. You may also notice the story evolving and changing direction, with potentially several protagonists throughout the entire ordeal. However if you can handle the crazy ride of a story you might find yourself enjoying it afterall. ;)

Anime OP of the Week
In honor of the new season starting this past weekend, this week's OP is for Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara. I think that this is the best OP for the show since it started. Song named "Braver" by ZAQ.

Anime ED of the Week
When I was looking for an ED this week, I came across an ED that I had completely forgotten about. Not because the ED is bad, in fact, the ED is one of the best in the recent years, but that the anime Gakusen Toshi Asterisk was so forgettable and uninteresting that I didn't think about it. With that being said, here's "Waiting for the rain" by Maaya Sakamoto from the anime Gakusen Toshi Asterisk.

Honorary Mention
If you know Japanese music, then you probably know of nano. This popular Japanese American singer that is popular with anime ED and OP. Sadly you can't find nano's new music on YouTube, so here is the last song released on YouTube for the anime Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA. Song "Bull's Eye" by nano.

Why do they even bother wasting money on making a haikyu dub.

Also it's not just Japanese culture that over works its most Asian cultures like Korea lots of Koreans at my work are always there. It's pretty much a 2nd home they have tooth brushes gyms mouthwash everything.
Have yet to watch Haikyuu so can't comment on that.

However, I will say that Shoukugeki no Souma S2 has the best OP out of the 3 seasons imo

I will say that between S2 and S3 OP, S3 just has a slight edge. Some reason the S2 OP singer's voice on SCREEN mode in that song was just missing something, but I did enjoy the visuals.
Prisma Illya sequel was expected, but the announcement seems a bit early. There isn't much source material left to work with and the releases are rather slow. Likely means the majority of it will be fanservice/filler, unfortunate.

Its not bad, but I have a slight bias towards the rock genre that they're using ;) But S3 is still a decent OP though

Definitely true that all Asian cultures suffer from the overworking issue. Just decided to focus solely on the Japanese though, this time around.
