I have an aunt who is pregnant for the first time. She tells everyone how great it is but at the first sign of the baby bump she worked out and dieted to lose it. Doctor told her she had a choice, lose weight and lose the baby through malnourishment or start eating for two. Some of us were discussing her situation the other night and I mentioned that she may be exhibiting a symptom of some sort of psychological disorder. I was wondering if her efforts to become less fat was a sign of anorexia. If not, is there a medical term for this behavior or is it common among first time moms who have always prided themselves on their figure?

Everyone has body issues. Depends on self esteem levels, and how you view yourself. The hormonal changes probably aren't helping either. Tell her to start eating more, even if the baby survives it could come out underdeveloped. Women crave more food while pregnant for a reason. Most of the nutrients are going towards the baby, not just fat.
My own sister managed to get back down to 115lb after giving birth without even dieting or exercising. She just reverted to her old eating habits.

My aunt that lives in San Diego was also like this during her first pregnancy, almost to the point where she lost the baby due to malnourishment. Someone is going to have to sit down with her and tell her that the risk is a real one, and that she does have a decision to make.

She could be trying to maintain her figure during pregnancy, she could be unhappy with the pregnancy and developed an eating disorder due to this, and it's also possible she already had an eating disorder before pregnancy and now the pregnancy is making her the centre of attention then you've noticed this. You'd have to ask her (and hope she is honest with you) to get the true version of what's going on with your aunt.
