Upgrade To MyBB 1.9.xx? |

Considering the size of the forum, I do not think upgrading the MyBB version would be a good idea, it will be a burden to manage. I think if they ever did consider upgrading, it would probably be better to just move over to a custom and in-house forum system, which would allow for easier customization.

The size of the forum wasn't the real issue when Omniscient finally upgraded last autumn. The real issue was the long span of time between upgrades. Going from 1.6.xx to 1.8.xx is problematic regardless of the size of the website. It's far easier to do incremental updates than it is to do major version upgrades. I was not around back then, and I figured it was just a user-size thing. True, 1.6 to 1.8 is a big jump there.

We had extended downtime thanks to database migration issues. MyBB 1.6 --> 1.8 will be faster to upgrade on a forum of 10,000 posts compared to HF's 37,106,139 posts. Not the only issue but it is one of the many. (Jul 29, 2018 07:18 PM)Hydra Wrote: It's a user-size thing too. HF's Database is HUGE. We had extended downtime thanks to database migration issues. Understood, yeah that makes more sense.
Just an FYI, it was mainly because Omni left it so long before upgrading from 1.6 to 1.8. MyBB 1.8 to 1.9 will actually be a bigger leap. When MyBB 1.9x comes out the PHP requirement will be bumped up to 7.2 (or 7.1 I think it was). This (and the TWIG conversion) will see most of HF's plugins break. The rest of the upgrade can be prepped on a clone of HF as 1.9 introduces a new way to handle themes, and it should actually decrease the amount of plugins HF uses which is always a plus.
A major problem is that Omni also does core edits. If he can use the Patches plugin or create his own version as he only likes to use his own work, core edits will be so much easier to track and re-implement upon upgrading MyBB to any version.

You'll have to do your own Search on here or at MyBB.com and look for the user 'l a b r o c c a' (without the spaces) and search his posts. Everything is there. I believe the minimum requirement for PHP will be 7.1. I just recently bumped up my website to PHP 7.1. So, I am good to go when 1.9.xx does come out. The real question is... is Omni willing to take the time to do all of this? He may say 'Screw 1.9.xx' and use 1.8.xx for the foreseeable future. (which would be a major mistake in my opinion) Time will tell, I guess. |
