I want to learn to code as a job. Where do I start?

Seems to be dependend on country, company size and stuff like that.
Even then you can do freelancing stuff, by funding your own company in more strict countries, but it will be harder to get a foot into the door through this method.

about the story shared by @google-cat
even that stuff requires some sort of degree, even if not university, in some countries.
You can always apply for that stuff randomly and it will probably pay more than an entry job, but not much more.

your first goal should be to find out how your country handles stuff. If its all based on degrees, you are kinda in a bad situation.
If you want to do freelance stuff you probably run well with webdesign stuff. I know several guys running small businesses by building homepages for restaurants, hotels and stuff like that in their area. Pretty easy work, becomes passive income at some point, win-win, but needs sale skills too.

I totally get your point, but I can tell you there are countries that wont even look at your portfolio if you dont provide the degree. Germany is a good example for that since everything has to be up to code and someone has to be held liable in worst case, thus only degree qualifies one for a job properly.

I'm looking through it but I'm very glad it highly reccommends SICP (which aligns to my believe) and my second favourite book The Algorithms. Very good share.
