I have a little list I usually follow:

 check for obvious places like /admin /administrator /cms /phpMyAdmin.
 Check /robots.txt
use a program like this: http://sc0rpion.ir/af/
Use a program called DirBuster to bruteforce direcrtories and files.
scan for a admin subdomain (http://admin.target.com)
scan with nmap after some kind of admin port
 ask for help.
