Username History Changes

Sounds like a good change. 🤝
This would've been useful for me back in December. 😝
Thank you for adding this but I'm sure there are ways around it though (old quotes from old threads, etc)
Love all the recent work you've been putting into the site.
Yes yes yes, this is a fantastic idea, best of both worlds.

Fact is that members need to show caution from day one of their membership. You can't wait a year and decide your security is important. Security has to be important immediately.

Indeed, that seems to be the mistake a lot of us make as users here and get our heads too far up our asses to realize what could happen with old data that was posted.
Have you ever thought of having quotes update with the current users username, not like it's needed due to what you said about users needing to be secure about where they're putting their information but maybe it'd cut down on some other non-needed issues?
Thank you so much for adding this feature.
Been so worried about sharing my HF profile with certain people due to this exact reason.
Very cool feature & one I have been eagerly waiting for. Thanks for this update.
Good idea, I was tired of seeing my first HF username from years ago.

But I thought the usernames were saved with the user SQL ID. It would be that much of a resource hog to create a function that fetches the usernames from the table that stores the past names and show them in a small dialog in the post? With the type of server you're running the SQL service on, I would of thought it would be nothing compared to the other queries running on the site.

I remember creating a similar system for a popular GTA SA:MP Server and it only ran the query around 2,000 times per second and it used 0.5% of the SQL Service.

You have 2 choices to accomplish your request.

1. Upon showthread.php load you'd have to check every user against any new username changes. And of course you'll need to preg_match or some function to look for the quote text. The username table is large but even if you reduce the query like:

SELECT from mybb_username_history WHERE UID IN(1,3,5423,232333) SORT BY date DESC

The "IN()" would of course grab each UID in the page which is normally 20 UID's. Then it would have to check quote mycode for a possible change. Then update the post in the database for future efficiency.

And realistically it's probably even more complicated than that.

2. Every time a username change occurs you'd run a query with a LIKE statement to find each quoted instance of the old username and then run an UPDATE statement. I can only imagine how long that would take. Almost positive this would choke the server instantly.

Changing showthread.php is not something I do lightly and I make sure mybb_posts table change are minimized because doing any type of LIKE searching will destroy the database. That's why I run a separate service for searching here. You even want to add an UPDATE statement based on the LIKE. No way would it work.

It seems that myBB does stuff differently with their SQL Database as when I made my system, it was really less complicated than that.

If I remember correctly, the correct setup was

-> User Changes their name (STORE THE NEW & OLD NAME INTO A DATABASE CALLED 'USERNAME_CHANGES' with their UID

-> When we want to fetch it (RUN A LOOP WITH A QUERY TO FETCH THE OLD USERNAMES CORRESPONDING TO THAT UID) and print onto our dialog.

As it seems, there's a different way of doing this on myBB like you have explained above.

At least I learned something new about this forum software as I personally do not deal with myBB. I am more of a xenforo user.

Then there would be no use of the archive of this forum and we would lose so much data that the forum would look empty.

This is a really bad suggestion, no offence.
I didn't catch the system exactly, I mis-understood what the user said but instead of re-making a whole system. Adding a cursor on dialog to the quote BB Function with the list of past usernames, instead of complicating our heads.

Ex: If you quote

It would run a query to search if the entered text is a valid user in the database and well, you know the rest.
Thanks Omni. This was much needed.
Will this update have impact on https://hackforums.net/uhsearch.php ?

Read the full post next time, he already stated this.

Thanks a lot Omni, I feel safe now xD.

We still know you were born in 1999
