Just curious, what do the tabs have to do with mobile friendliness? Is it a scaling thing? Or are the tabs directly influencing Google's rating? I'm not trying to argue your point, I'm just trying to understand how you want to accomplish this as I'm not familiar with all of the seo aspects. When you recently experimented with the drop-down menu in the top left corner (which is a common feature among mobile sites), I personally didn't like it at all. It just felt.. plain and generic (I know it was a test, but still). Then when I tried it on the desktop version, it felt like I was browsing a blown up version of a mobile site (why should mobile features be seen on desktop?).
I'm all for being mobile friendly, and I agree that some changes do need to be implemented, but from my own user experience, I'm perfectly happy the way things are when I browse the site from my mobile device. If anything, this site has one of the best universal designs that work well on both desktop and mobile. Most other sites would just have a totally different looking style due to the scaling (at least from what I've seen).
I guess you could argue that I'm just used to navigating the site on my phone with the way it is, but I've attached a screenshot below of how it looks while using Google Chrome for iPhone for you to see yourself. I did not zoom in or anything, I just genuinely think the site looks really clean and easy to navigate. But hey, if you want to make it even better, then please do! Just thought I'd let ya know.
Thanks for the update.

I suppose the issue is that.
