HF Mobile Friendly

We must become mobile friendly. This means the tabs must go. We will never accomplish mobile friendliness with them. The index navigation has to change and then so does forumdisplay and showthread pages. This is not an option. It must happen.

This was Google's message in 2015:
https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/6196932?hl=en

Quote:Starting April 21, 2015, Google Search will be expanding its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in Google Search results. Users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results optimized for their devices.

Notice the "significant impact", well that's what HF is feeling. It's imperative that we move to a mobile friendly design in order to return to the high quality results we once had. We rank very high on all desktop results but get almost nothing for mobile devices. This is a huge and immense problem that has to get resolved asap.

Unfortunately vast change requires vast patience from members as well as understanding that new designs are required. Everyone loves the tabs. The TABS MUST GO. Just how it is. You may not like other versions of HF without them and you may deem navigation awkward but this is not a choice anymore. It's something that has to be done.

It angers me greatly that my attempts to push us to mobile friendly were not well recieved. As a matter of fact many of you acted like complete assholes. This is unacceptable. I'm not sure what I have to say to get it through your heads. You must understand these words...WE MUST BE MOBILE FRIENDLY.

I'm not sure how or when I'm going to get the work done because right now everything is just crazy. I'm still fixing a ton of stuff from the MyBB update and a decent part of that decision to do it was to prepare us for mobile friendliness. A lot of 1.8x theme is already divs instead of tables, so that's helpful.

Once HF is fixed up I will be planning a path for us to be mobile friendly. I'll work on a theme in a dev environment and any live beta testing will be as a secondary theme choice and not default.

But this has to happen. Tabs will have to go. Things have to get done that many of you won't like but I hope the changes over time will make sense and you might even grow to like them. I can't stress it enough that this is a non-choice situation. Expect it to happen.

Thank you.
You have my understanding. Best of luck accomplishing this.
Happy t'giving.
How about doing the following:
have tabs enabled for desktop users and disable them for mobile users (you can easily edit that with useragents)
Why Not use A m.hackforums.net? For mobile. It will be difficult to operate Without tabs & all that !
You may also consider to develop an APP dedicated for HackForums instead which would be better and mobile friendlyh both supports IoS and Android

Is it not easy to have two different “sites” I guess. One mobile optimized that loads of it detects a mobile device and one for desktop? Google mail does this “Mobile, older version, Desktop”

You can still have tabs on mobile.

This is the type of shit I don't want to hear. You still think I can keep tabs even though I am straight up telling that it will not happen.

THEY MUST FUCKING GO!

Then I have to run two navigation systems. Essentially run two themes and templates. That's a problem. It's enough of an issue running one theme on this site. Having to run different themes for different devices is not an acceptable choice.

Same answer. Mobile site versions are going to possibly create duplicate content and again, now I have to double up the work for themes and plugins. It adds a complication over time that doesn't actually solve the problem.

An app does not make us mobile friendly in search results.

I could do this all day long. Where members try to tell me what to do and I tell them why I'm not going to do it. This is where I lose my own patience then become frustrated and angry.

I'm making it very clear and trying oh so hard not to rage. But I think my first post was amazingly clear about what must happen and without question.

Give me a site example that passes Google's mobile friendly. If by chance it's a competing site please PM me.

As long as everything that's on the screen is mobile friendly / readable that's fine.
For example, you can have something like this without a problem https://material.io/guidelines/components/tabs.html

Yes, I know but please note how the tabs work. They load the entire index page then hide the content not under the tab.

Interesting examples on that page but one issue. We have 10 tabs, not just 3 or 4.

Basically the index page navigation is a problem because it's designed for desktop. I want to fix it first then work on forumdisplay and then showthread.
I guess this makes sense but what do you plan to use to replace the tabs? I noticed all threads in harder to find sections lost tons of traffic when we removed tabs a little while ago.
I understand. You want to fully optimize google seo and mobile friendliness.

We will miss the tabs but do what you need to do.

Most sites are using some type of subdomain for mobile.

SneakyBoots Discord or HF convo me.
When we previously had no tabs (during the upgrade) i found it to be a shame that some sections were hidden. Such as the Member Auctions.
Hopefully you can somehow make a nice index to fit everything.
I'm excited for this, as I'm always on mobile. 😉 People just need to be patient.

This actually looks really nice, would look great as a mobile theme if possible. I'm no expert on site building though.
