Let's keep in mind that while the 'reason' for such a crime might be pretty silly, there is much more involved when someone commits such a crime.

He was inebriated, and possibly had unchecked mental disorders.

Mental instability is a real issue, and combine that with drugs/alcohol, and yep SENSELESS CRIME.

That's pretty average in Europe. In Norway max sentence is 21 years, and that's only for extremely gruesome murders, mass murderers etc. Anders Breivik who killed 69 teenagers only got 21 years in prison. The jailtime can be (and will be in this case) extended if they don't feel he is reformed.
