I don’t think it was business because you didn’t charge any profit/interest.
You let him borrow money as a friend.

Same here. If I let a friend "borrow" money I just always assume I won't get it back and I treat it as a gift. If I do end up getting it back that's nice, but if I don't that is what I'm expecting so it won't ruin the relationship.

fair point, but he gave me his word that he would pay me back by the Jan 31st , so i believed it, there was a contract on it, i've let friends borrow irl but nobody would lend $1k and never expect it back lol

Completely agree with you. When someone gives you their word and don't stick to their words, then the trust drops. You were right for opening this dispute. I would do the same

Omniscient can solve this? Because it’s loan and I’m not sure if it’s allowed on HF.
But it still sucks when someone asks you for money and you help them, and in the end you’re the one who ends up in this situation. I really don’t like asking anyone for money (like a loan), even when I don’t have enough to eat...

If i were you i would offer him a payment plan before going directly down the DD route.

Payment plan like every week $150-200 and if he misses any payment than directly go to DD

The defining feature of a loan is that the money is expected to be repaid, not that interest is charged.

With that being said, I don't read it as against the rules here on HF.

The rules say "Donation Begging: Requests for donations, loans, investments, or gifts are not permitted."

and

"No donation begging or fundraising threads: This includes requests for donations, loans, investors, or financial assistance of any kind."

There is no donation begging or begging thread. This is a interest-free loan between friends. I think you're clear as far as the rules go.

Just my two cents as I've been around a while with loaning friends money both online and IRL, so have seen some signs and the way its communicated... but my senses are going off like mad, this Enlil guy has no plans on returning your money and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a whole list of other people who have been conned out of their money - the constant fake reassurances and missed deadlines is just a common tactic to buy more time before the inevitable happens.

I pray I'm wrong but it's a lesson nonetheless

Thanks to everyone coming in to share their two cents. I don't feel obligated to respond to any of the things mentioned as everyone is just sharing their humble opinions and I respect that.

Just as Ky0 mentioned in the beginning, our friendship is totally different from business and it's not going to be tainted over something like this as I was the one who suggested to do this in the first place with the contracts in place. There had been some unfortunate delays which he was made aware of.

So, looking forward to putting this behind. Unlike how most people may perceive or assume, if I wanted to scam like the hundreds of others here in this forum over the years, I'd have done that during my 7 year tenure here ✌
