Red Garden: Review

Red Garden (レッド ガーデン, Reddo Gāden?) is a Japanese animated television program produced by Gonzo studios and broadcast in Japan on TV Asahi since October 3, 2006. The plot revolves around four girls who become involved in a series of supernatural murders happening throughout the vicinity of a fictional depiction of New York City. It combines elements from typical American movie productions like horror, drama, mystery and musicals. An OVA sequel called Dead Girls was released in Japan, on August 8, 2007.

Note: From today, I'm going to start writing reviews for everything that I've watched.

It will hurt.

Prior to starting this series, I noticed that Red Garden was from the studio behind Gantz and Hellsing. I did enjoy those two, and so I was expecting this to live up to those standards or even surpass them. In all honesty however, I can't believe what I just went through.

To begin with, this story has a terribly weak hook, which almost made me drop the series altogether up until the very last minute of the first episode. It's almost indescribable as to why I found that last minute as interesting enough as to carry on until the very end. All I know is that I asked this very question: "What are you hiding?" Thus, I sat through a story which was painfully slow in terms of progression.

I then noticed that the artwork was cheap in some ways; one instance being that some of the skylines were simple gradients. This was redeemed though, as the fashion on the characters caught my attention the most, leading me to believe that this must have been one of the focus points. The artwork began to turn into something admirable, as a simple change of clothes had completely shaken the atmosphere between each scene.

As for the soundtrack, it felt like something usually heard in movies; almost fairy-tale like. The opening track and the second ending track are fitting, but only the opening theme was more attractive. Saying this, they will not be remembered for long.

Gradually, each of the four girls’ emotions rubbed off onto me. It was possible to feel what they were feeling, as each of their lives was portrayed sharply. Not just them either, but every person that suffered during the struggle. The musicals included in a number of episodes also helped to develop intense drama. I haven’t experienced any series featuring musicals before, but this definitely worked. As this story worked its way up from the various blood-filled murders, suicides, and fights towards the final battle, the mystery that was built up all before was shattered with deep, shocking truth. The last scene intertwines beauty with depression, but leaves one or two unanswered questions.

You need patience with Red Garden, but it’s worth it.

Fasten your seatbelts; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

8/10
Nice Review, you should keep them up :}, When I first started your review I was like " Ok, something to not watch" Then you changed it around :P. I Guess I'll give this Anime a shot and I'll let you know my opinion :}.
Your.. review is extremely short.. or just looks like it is. Judging by the second section.. I feel like I really shouldn't watch it.
If art and design is a major point in it, it would seem that more time could be put into the storyline.
I might end up watching it, although I'm not a big fan of anime movies, because at the end of quite a few you're like "DAMMIT I WANT MOREEE!"
so yeah.. lol
I like your review, Ryuku. It makes me not want to watch it.
I was patient with Ergo Proxy, but I don't think I can do that for a movie.
^_^
Just kidding, I'm so going to check it out tonight. =]

Once you start on this, don't give up on it!

Believe me, reviews aren't supposed to be too long. I've just read up on criticism in order to understand how to write reviews, and I've learnt a lot of things which shouldn't be done.

If you're a typical Shounen Anime fan or if you don't have any patience, then this series isn't for you.

By the way, it isn't a movie. Sorry if you thought that. It has 22 episodes plus an OVA sequel.

Ahh sorry about that.
Mmm I don't know it's just that soo many people are often like "DUDE YOUR REVIEW IS TOO SHORT" so yeah, I thought yours was a little bit short, but I also noticed you had a wikipedia link, probably filling in the synopsis a little more.
Ahhh.... I hate waiting for stuff to happen, unless if it's a suspense builder. I don't really like shounen anime if you mean action shounen anime, I like more of romance... and some action. So i'll put this one into consideration.

Pretty good review. Still might watch it though.

Thank you for the review, I will look into this anime as it seems interesting.

It looks... okay.
I might try it some time after I finish all the other things I'm watching (<- that's why I haven't posted in a while).
Enjoy guys :)

Let me know what you think after watching it.
