Gantz Creator Hiroya Oku Wants to End Manga in 2012
Science-fiction manga launched in 2000 & inspired TV anime, 2 live-action films
In the authors' notes section for next year's combined 6th/7th issue of Shueisha's Young Jump magazine, Hiroya Oku wrote that he wants to draw the ending for his Gantz manga in 2012. The magazine issue's official release date is January 4.
The manga follows a young Tokyo man who is reanimated after a deadly subway accident. Kei and other resurrected people go on violent, seemingly endless missions at the behest of an unseen host.
Oku launched the manga in Young Jump in 2000, and the 33rd compiled book volume will ship in Japan next month. The "Final Phase" of the manga began in 2009. The manga inspired a television anime series animated by Gonzo (and released by ADV Films in North America) and two live-action films (released by NEW PEOPLE Entertainment). Dark Horse Comics released the 20th English volume of the manga in North America this month.
Project to Offer Free Airfare to Japan to 10,000 Foreigners Canceled
Japanese government declines "Fly to Japan!" project proposal's budget
The Japan Tourism Agency of the Japanese government announced on Monday that its "Fly to Japan!" project has been canceled. The project, which would have offered free airfare to 10,000 overseas tourists in 2012, was canceled because it "was not approved as a governmental draft budget of FY 2012."
The Japanese Tourism Agency had planned on allocating 1.1 billion yen (about US$14 million) from its requested 2012 budget for the program. The purpose of the program was to have participants spread the word of their travels online and, by extension, the safety of visiting Japan now.
The Japanese Tourism Agency's press release announcing the cancellation stated the following:
Quote:As the recovery from the earthquake is an ongoing urgent task, Japan has been vigorously working towards its restoration with the support from the world. Almost all of Japan has been back to normal and ready to welcome visitors. We are sincerely looking forward to having you to see Japan with your own eyes.
The Japan National Tourism Organization stated the following regarding the cancellation:
Quote:We realise that this announcement is going to disappoint thousands of people around the world, but we hope people will understand how insensitive it would appear for the Japanese Government to give people free flights to Japan when the cities, towns and villages devastated by the tsunami are still in desperate need of funding for reconstruction. We also would not want people thinking that the generous donations given from around the world to aide those affected by the disaster was being spent on giving people free flights.
Indonesian Creator's Manga Posted by Shogakukan
Medical doctor leaves career to become manga author
The publisher Shogakukan posted Vivian Wijaya's Kokkyonaki Gakuen (Campus Dwellers Without Borders) manga on its Club Sunday website on November 4. According to The Japan Times paper, Wijaya's slice-of-life comedy story is the first Japanese manga by an Indonesian female author. Shogakukan also states that the work is the first simultaneous trilingual publication of a comic in Japanese, English, and Indonesian.
The manga follows 15-year-old Hajime Tomono as he adjusts to cultural gaps while attending a boarding school with students from more than 50 countries. Wijaya, also known under the pen name DrVee, used her personal experiences as a high school student in the United Kingdom to compose the story.
Born in Tokyo, Wijaya loved manga since childhood, but her doctor family discouraged her from pursuing a career as a manga artist. Unsatisfied with her job as a medical doctor, Wijaya attended the Jakarta-based Machiko Manga School and Tokyo's Nippon Designers School to pursue her dream. After graduation, Wijaya's teachers told the aspiring author that she had little chance of becoming a successful manga artist. However, Wijaya served an apprenticeship with the Hayate the Combat Butler manga creator Kenjirou Hata that helped her to improve and commercialize her works. The Indonesian manga creator's next project will target high school students, according to The Japan Times.
Kokkyonaki Gakuen's first chapter will be available on Shogakukan's Club Sunday site in Japanese, English, and Indonesian until January 5, 2012.

Comiket Attendance Numbers Falling!
With this years Comiket coming towards a close, the big guys in charge noticed a decline in attendee's and suggested that if this happens year after year, they will be forced to close the biggest anime convention in the world. C81's big minds tried to work out why this happened and what they could do to improve, the main reason they decided this years wasn't as good was due to the earthquake and the struggling yen.
Even with all that bad talk, there's still lots of good! For example, Comiket 81 had over 500,000 attendees over the 3 day period, and even though this was less than last years, it is still an outstanding achievement! This is why people fly from all over the worlds to attend! If anyone would like to know; Comiket 80 had over 540,000 attendees, and C79 had 520,000. The highest mark was C76 had 560,000 So the numbers have shrunk, quite massively, it is still the biggest in the world, and is to be feared!
Let's be happy though! I mean, all them lovely Asian girls - COSPLAYING!

Fate/Zero - TOO Gore.
Fans of Fate/Zero will know how gory it is. It's often on one of those famous "chan" sites and it never fails to impress. The manga edition of the show will include some of the popular grotesque scenes including the ever so infamous: "Human Umbrella." I would show pictures; but I don't want to be kicked off the team by the big boss. So search for them at your OWN discretion. Either way, the series never fails to impress and fans of the series should definitely start reading. Can't wait to see the scans!
