[Guide] What should I do now?

[Guide] What should I do now?

Did you just finish watching (insert title here)? Did you just finish reading (insert title here)? Did you just finish playing (insert title here)?

STOP, DON'T MAKE A THREAD. Here's what you're going to do next:

e.g. Clannad (Anime):

Note - Open Notepad/Wordpad/Word/etc to keep a list of things that catch your attention.

[Anime Charts] -

If you would prefer something that is currently airing or due to air, then select something from the charts:

Code
http://twitter.com/#!/animucharts
http://atxpieces.wordpress.com/author/atxpieces/
http://neregate.com/blog/anime-charts/

[ANN*] -

Search term/s > "Clannad"

Follow the link and you'll find a list of related titles that you can start on.

[*Baka-Updates Manga] -

1. For current or due to be released Manga - On the right hand side, you'll see a link "What's New!" which will lead you to a list for the current year. Play with the filters to suit your needs and then all you need to do is click on the title which will give you information such as the scanlation progress and user submitted reviews.

2. Use the search box to find the title that you just completed. On the main page of the title, there will be all the information you will need. This website is especially useful since most of the text contained are live links. Scroll down for more precise searches such as in the context of authors and artists.

3. Alternatively, you can find something via the other links on the right hand side such as "Genres", "Categories" and "Stats".

[Wikipedia*] -

1. Click on the developer's name and scroll all the way to the bottom where there's usually a box with the complete works. Choose something and go from there:

2. Similar to the first method, but instead by studio, director, or in other cases writer.

[MAL*] -

1. Copy one of the genres, character names, or people involved in the production and search for it in MAL using the search box in the right hand corner - Don't forget to use the selection menu.

Usually, there will be a list of results if there has been more than one production. Didn't know about one of them? Go and watch that. If not, there is a "Recommendations" tab that contains a list of user submitted titles. Sometimes, there are comments alongside to help you.

2. Same method as Wiki with the staff. Click on the "Characters & Staff" tab and go from there.

3. Advanced search - Instead of searching a term as in the first method, click on the magnifying glass icon and then "Advanced search" next to the other search box. This will bring you to the advanced search page. Play with the filters and you should find something that will suit your needs.

4. Click on the "Anime" tab, and then the "Top Anime" sub-tab (Same thing with the Manga tab). If you like jumping on bandwagons, then try one of those listed there.

[*BakaBt] -

Note - you do not need an account in order to do this.

At the very top, click on the link that says "Random" (you may have to do this a few times since there are no filters). Eventually however, you will find a title that should seem interesting enough to you.

[*anime-planet] -

1. anime-planet has a very handy tool that you can use to find titles easily. On the homepage, scroll down to where it says "Browse by Tags". Clicking on your choice of genre/theme should lead you to a list of things that you can take a shot at.

2. Same method as MAL #2.

3. Same method as MAL #3.

[*AnimeBytes] -

Note - You need an account in order to do this.

Note - This method is mainly for games, but you can use it for other media too.

Click on the "Torrents" tab and in the main box click "Game Search Options". Play with the filters and find a title you like.

[*VNDB] -

Note - This method is for games/visual novels.

Click on the "Visual Novels" link at the left hand side and use the arrows to play with the release date, popularity, and rating. The icons in the second column will alert you of the compatibility between systems and languages that the title is available in.

Here are some recommendation charts you can look at as well. Thanks to elsie for the help.

Ok, so now you should have a title or two that have caught your attention. Now you ask: "Wait, how do I know that this is good?" Here are a few things you can do:

1. Read the synopsis < THIS IS A MUST. Don't ever start something without knowing this.

2. Check for reviews < BE AWARE OF SPOILERS. Users should usually state whether their review contains them. If not, then don't read it, or at the very least, be careful. MAL, ANN and AP are places where you can find them. Otherwise:

Google > Search terms > "(insert title here) (insert media type here) review"

3. Check for ratings < As well as reviews, ratings are also a good factor to boost the ensurance.

4. Above all, if you read that it's bad and you think that you still may like it, GO FOR IT.

If all else fails or you need that extra bit of re-assurance, then go ahead, make your damn thread.

Have a nice day.
