I'm wanting to switch from Mint OS over to Ubuntu, I used Ubuntu years back (before they made the default background purple, I believe it used to be orange?) Anyways. What do you guys think is the most stable version of Ubuntu? Ia the latest version stable or should I get an older version?
Any suggestions?
EDIT: i've also been considering going to Debian instead of Ubuntu..yay?nay? :p
Just get the new one, and install a light weight desktop, or WM. I have the new one with that and it's not all bad :P

would you mind breifly explaining what a light weight desktop / WM is? :p
edit: OHH you just mean a lightweight Desktop Environment? :p
Give Lubuntu a try! It's an LXDE variant of Ubuntu and is very light weight! No unity or bloat.

WM is a window manager.
Here's some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_window_manager
I have used debian forever and will love it forever <3
Ubuntu 10.04 is the most stablest out of all of them. How ever most things on it are out of date like Gnome2 and i think the GDM Login Manager has reached end of life too.
If you want a truly light weight distro give bodhi a shot. You hardly get anything installed just the e17 window manager and midori and lxterminal and synaptic. Its a very light weight distro yet what it can do rivals KDE.

In comparison to other distributions like Debian, Ubuntu will never come near stable. Grab the latest ubuntu and get rid of unity and gnome3 then install fluxbox WM or go for gnome2.x tarball compiling or XFCE4. I think you'll like these two DE's better than LXDE or KDE.
DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS MEMBER
Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 are stable ones... But if you don't like the panel feature, go for 11.04...
In beta versions Ubuntu had problems with Unity such as flickering screens and stuff... But they were resolved with time...

Ubuntu can be classed as a stable distribution, just like windows is considered stable although it's a nightmare due to its insecurities. Compared to Debian, Ubuntu doesn't know the definition of stability.
I have Ubuntu as main OS on my laptop, and it has had it's problems, but I like it.
But if you are a inexperienced Linux user, you're better of with Ubuntu. I've been a Linux user for about 4 months now, and trying Debian for the first time was hard.

Okay well I have Debian installed at the moment, I guess I'll uninstall that and try what you said xP
EDIT: or should i stick with debian and remove gnome and throw on XFCE4? :p

Stick with Debian, by far in my opinion the best Linux distribution out there. Debian is incredibly stable, which version did you get? I just installed Debian 6.0.5 with the FreeBSD kernel on my new laptop. Gnome on Debian should be 2.x which is my favourite version even if I don't use it that would be my preference over 3.x and it's also one or two releases forward from when gnome introduced theming.
You could use fluxbox WM, or any other WM like I said but I was only stating that because I didn't think the OP would be able to use Debian. On debian you don't have gnome 3 hogging everything and if gnome 2.x is hogging for you then you'll have to back up onto a WM instead of using a DE. It's only essential if you are paranoid about memory usage or if you are running servers.
