Can I check to see if a user exists before attempting to bruteforce ftp?

About to leave hydra on overnight with a 14 mil password list to see if it can bruteforce this ftp server. None of the default user/pass combos have worked, so the thing is that I don't know if root or admin exist as users. Is there any way that I can verify whether or not the users exist before spending time bruteforcing?
I highly doubt it, i'd just try bruteforcing admin & test, if you don't find any thing i'd just move on.

Thanks for the reply, I don't suppose you'd happen to know what the default is for a site using GoDaddy's service? I figured they'd randomly generate one but you never know.
List of common usernames in FTP

admin
administrator
test
user
test123
root
toor

anything else isn't worth guessing
