This is the portion of the review that really makes this show look brilliant. The animation on this show was not half-assed. The overall quality of the art was definitely focused on a lot in the process of creating this series, because it looked amazing.
Besides its amazing comedy and artwork, Hataraku Maou-sama! is probably most well-known for its OSTs. This show has some of the best music of any 2013 series, and mind you, it's a comedy! For a comedy to have the visual and audio effects that this show has is rare, and it really made for a better experience in general.
Plot:
Being as this is primarily a comedy series, you can't really go into this show expecting much plot. However, the show did deliver a pretty good back story, and at first I thought it was an action/adventure series!
Although the story behind it was good, it seems like they did start slacking off a little bit after a few episodes. The show went from a good story that could go anywhere, to ridiculous humor with no point. Granted, the humor in this show was amazing, it's just that a little more focus on the main story really could have helped it be a better series than it already is.
The biggest failing point in the entire show is actually in the plot. The problem is that the story progressed so slowly after the first few episodes, that by the end they would either have to completely rush the ending, or have no real ending at all. The producers decided to go with the latter. Now, there technically was an ending, but it was really subtle, and didn't feel like a good ending note. On top of that, the entire episode just felt like any other of the episodes before it, without anything really special about it. However, the move they decided to go with is make the ending subtle enough to the point where they could make a second season if they so chose to, but there was also enough to call it quits there. Personally, I believe there will be a season 2, due to its large success.
Characters:
The characters in this show are really what made it special, just as it is with most comedy series'.
Sadao Maou is the main character in this series, being voiced by Ryota Ohsaka. Maou really brings life to the show. He is a great person in general, with heroic qualities, and great leadership skills. On top of that, he knows how to goof off, and has some hilarious moments. He provides a good twist on what "Satan" is normally known to be.
Shirou Ashiya, voiced by Yuuki Ono, is one of the most brilliant supporting characters I've ever seen. His character as a servant to his lord (Maou) is portrayed excellently, and every scene he is in is pretty much perfect. His comedy really makes the series, and the show definitely wouldn't be the same without him.
Emi Yusa, voiced by Yoko Hikasa is a very interesting character. She is known as the "hero", and is a born enemy of Maou, although their relationship begins to change over time. Although the show seems to be focused moreso on a different relationship, I can see Emi and Maou forming a relationship in the next season. Honestly, I'm a bit upset that their relationship wasn't focused on more this season.
Thoughts:
Overall, this show is great. As far as comedies go, this isn't just my favorite of the Spring 2013 season, it is one of the best I've ever seen.
Again, my only complaint, really, is that the show wasn't longer, and couldn't really finish at the pacing it was at. As long as another season of it airs, I am completely satisfied with the show for know, and there's nothing really wrong with it.
I would recommend this show to anyone who wants a good laugh, and likes a good twist on stereotyped roles. If you're a very sensitive religious person, this may not be the best show for you, but otherwise, definitely go for it!
My Rating: ★★★★★★★★★★ 8.5/10
