How to Securely and Properly use your VPN Server

Welcome to my short tutorial on how to properly use a VPN and to teach you some quick and simple logic about using one.

Precautions

You must be sure to either choose the right VPN for you, or to combine multiple VPN's together.

If what you're looking for is a reliable VPN server to be RATing on, then you need a VPN with portforwarding enabled.
Currently there are no free VPN's that offer port forwarding, because simply it will be costing them too much to be offering it as a free service.

If you just want a VPN for regular browsing, netflix, xbox live etc.
Then you can honestly make due with a regular VPN service that does not have portforwarding.

One last thing to consider is that the company you acquire the VPN from might keep logs. I will go a little deeper into this later, but for now, just remember that if you're trying to do black-hat type activities the idea is to obviously get a VPN server that keeps no logs of your activity.

Step 1 : To be taken before connecting to your VPN server (And after)

First thing you want to do before connecting to a VPN server is to remove previous traces from your browsing habits. Cookies and flash cookies and other metadata kept on your system and browser folders will reveal to a website who you are, even if you are connected to a VPN server. If you are not careful to remove this stuff, there really is no point in using the VPN at all for those websites.

For internet explorer:

For Google Chrome:

Navigate to
chrome://settings/clearBrowserData

And do the following...

For Mozilla Firefox:

And you should be good for the first step if you've done this.

Step 2 : Things to take into consideration while you are connected to your VPN

While you are connected to your VPN, you have a much higher chance of staying anonymous then you would if you were not connected.

When you are not connected to your VPN, your ISP can read your webpages, view all data you've sent out and data you've received in, they can see your regular browsing history even when deleted.

When connected to your VPN, your ISP can see that you are sending or receiving data, but they will not be able to read it because it is encrypted by numerous levels of encryption, this depends on the VPN server you have, and possibly the VPN client settings.

That being said, this does not make you invincible. As people with VPN's have often encountered legal problems when facing themselves with black hat activities ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/09/26/...ntroversy/ - http://www.hacker10.com/internet-anonymi...o-the-fbi/ ) you have to be aware of what kind of move is a bad move, and what kind of move is a good move.

I'll give some short examples.

While logged into the VPN server, doing these things would be a no-no (Blow your cover)

- Logging in to any account you did not create using the VPN to begin with.
- Checking your personal email account
- Logging in to ANY financial service. e.g PayPal, Blockchain, PerfectMoney.
- Using your regular chat service (if was not created via VPN/Proxy service)
- Logging into FaceBook

These things will all immediately blow your cover while connected to a VPN. You must think like a criminal and not leave any crumbs behind.

Step 3 : A very important decision - Your Payment Option (if paying)

For obvious reasons, (but not for some people) paying with PayPal for a VPN service is utterly useless. You've now paid for the item you will be using to hide your identity, with a personal PayPal account/credit card/bank/etc.

At this moment I would highly and ONLY recommend using Bitcoin or a middleman who has bitcoin to purchase a VPN service for you .
You simply do not want to leave a papertrail.

If possible, purchase bitcoin yourself off somebody and use a proxy to create a bitcoin wallet online, where you would collect the bitcoin and use it to pay for the VPN server.

Step 4 : VPN's, Datacenters and Logs

The truth be told, any VPN company, even if they keep logs or not, they in a way will ALWAYS hold logs of some sort. While most countries are legally obligated to hold onto logs for a time period, or to send them off for analyse, other's do not have any laws governing their internet usage.

However, that being said, while these state or federal laws might not exist for that area, that does not mean that the original ISP or Datacenter where the VPN company houses their servers does not keep/report logs.

Assume every company keeps logs.

Assume every website keeps logs.

You are being watched.

Step 5 : When you are done.... You want to repeat step 1

You want to repeat step 1 to remove the browsing activities again from your system and browser.

Additionally, a quick sweep with CCleaner can help take care of some additional files that otherwise would be left behind until reboot.

Additional information:

I personally prefer to use nvpn.net as I find them reliable, but I will share some VPN's I know that I know are reliable.

nVpn - With nVpn.net you can anonymize and encrypt your entire Internet activities. Regardless, whether you like to simply browse, keep a blog, write e-mails / ftp, run a business, transfer money, download images, exchange files or chat, you will always be unobserved and safe.

OpticVPN - Servers are now completely bulletproof. Thanks to the donations, we were able to make a complete switch. Although we do not keep logs, having bulletproof servers help increase the security of our VPN by a huge margin ensuring the anonymity of our buyers. We hope you enjoy using our service. https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=3811121 - Brought to you by https://hackforums.net/member.php?action=profile&uid=797528 xflat.

InstaVPN - One of HackForums own VPN sellers, a leading VPN with great customer support and custom clients. Amazing. Brought to you by https://hackforums.net/member.php?action=profile&uid=1406237 En1gma.

^^ Those are clickable. ^^

That's all i'm going to list as I don't want to play favorites or anything biased, etc.

That's all, thanks for reading and stay safe.

Thanks for the post, was looking for a thread like this to decided how I'm going to buy my first paid VPN. ✌
Thanks for the post, just looking for a VPN and this helps.
Hope you don't mind a couple of questions though, I can't ask these on the marketplace for the VPN's as I don't jave a positive rep/
the instavpn and opticvbp have different prices for the open port and closed port versions, what are the main differences?
Should I use a free VPN to sign up to the paid VPN or is that taking paranoia too far?
Or at least use a free VPN to sign up for gmail, and then use that gmail to register the paid VPN?
Would the incognito mode on chrome work instead of clearing all cookies, history etc?
Thanks for your time
Very nice I am bookmarking for future use.

You could use a free vpn to register. If paying with bitcoin that shouldn't be a problem.

Incognito mode WILL help, assuming you use it regularly and clear info manually before using it. Basically all it will help you with is skipping step one and the final step if use properly.
