Inspired a bit by iMyth's thread on clearing up myths about homosexuality, I'm going to go ahead and do something a little more "taboo". Furries.

Yes, that weird thing where people find their animal spirits or something like that. There are different brands of furries. I'll start off with a few FAQs.

Why do you dress up like animals and fuck other people dressed up like animals?

Uh, no. Most furries frown upon people who do that, and I'm among the majority of those. There's a name for those people, and they're known as murrsuiters. I have no interest in that, and the majority of furs don't either. If you think otherwise, stop watching CSI.

Do you fuck/want to fuck animals?

What!? Ew. No. There are people who do. We don't talk about those people. There's a difference between furries, and those... things.

Do you like My Little Pony?

Nope. Nope nope nope. There are those who do, and they're called bronies, but bronies ≠ furries.

What percentage of furries are LGBT?

Funny you should ask that. I ended up doing an in depth analysis of 3000 personal ads on a furry dating site, Pounced, and here's the results.

As you can see, almost 3/4ths of the furry community is gay/bi, along with over 200 who did not specify a sexual orientation in their profile.

What makes someone a furry?

There are any number of things, and it really depends a lot on what one's own perception of a furry is. For me, I'm interested in anthropomorphic animals, and the art culture surrounding them, as well as being interested in fursuits and performing, so that's what makes me a furry. However, to others, it could be any one thing of those, or it could be something completely different, like a fascination with animals that extends beyond normal human fascination to the point where they wish to be in a community populated by animals, or humanoid animals.

Do you jack off to furry porn/hentai?

I do not actively seek it out, but I'm unlikely to turn away from something if it turns me on.

Are all furries into [Insert Fetish Name Here]?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: An individual's preference in sexual stimulus does not pertain to an individual culture or community. They function independently. One can be a furry, and not have any sexual fetishes at all, or be into every sexual fetish under the sun. One's identification with a community does not signify interest in a fetish.

For me, it's not really a sexual thing. I'm more in it for the community. Animal costumes don't turn me on, but I find them a fun facet of furries. It's like Halloween for some people. They put significant amounts of work into their costumes, and it's generally interesting to see how people express their "fursona".

As for acts, I enjoy the art, I enjoy the camaraderie, and I enjoy having a like-minded community. As for those who are turned on by fursuits, and the like, I doubt it's about the anonymity. It's more likely the same way that bondage turns some people on. Furthermore, many furries actually don't have sex in fursuits, nor do they growl, bite, meow, or otherwise act like an animal in sex outside of possibly roleplay. 🤝

It's basically creating a roleplay character. You name it, you give it a personality, it can be a direct reflection of your personality, or it can be someone completely different.

As for the fursuits, not every furry has them. In fact, I'd say that many don't, including myself. There are artists who will custom make them, or you can buy some premade ones, though by doing that, you're basically adopting a character. They can be quite expensive, which is part of the reason I don't have one, in addition to me not really having any opportunity or reason to wear it :P. Some can run upwards of a thousand dollars.

I don't actually dress up. The furry community is generally any animal character in general, though inside of that, there are further subdivisions. Namely, furries (the main ones) and scalies (dragons, lizards, snakes, etc.). A dragon is still considered a furry, though to be specific, you can call them scalies.

I just kind of fell into the community. I started just as a "human observer", then eventually I developed my own fursona and "became" a furry, even though I was already involved in the community before.

As for the number of furries around, I'm sure there are some that don't admit it, but I've met more than I thought I would in any non-furry specific place.

Rarely. Some furries are so into the community, that it permeates every aspect of their life, and you'll notice it, but usually, you would never guess someone's a furry unless they tell you.

Erm, no. I do not have any interested in fucking someone dressed in a fursuit. I prefer human/human sex. I find fursuit sex to be awkward, even as a concept. No, I haven't tried it either. No, I don't pretend that someone's an animal while I fuck them. For me, it's a community that, yes, does have some sexual aspects. Outside of that, it's just something social for me.
