Omnicoin suggestion thread

Omnicoin suggestions thread

Omnicoin has recently been declining in popularity and value, as I am sure you have noticed. Because of this, we are planning an overhaul of the project. We will be replanning and renewing our efforts and developments, and hopefully getting the coin back on its feet.

Currently, only Crypto, Doctor Blue and myself seem to be actively working on the omnicoin project. We really need a refresh, get things moving again with more support. Hopefully we can reorganize our developments, continue developing new things, and provide more support for the coin. I would really like to see the coin become used and successful again. In the coming days we will be redesigning the sticky thread, modifying the omnicoin team, moving the center of omnicoin officially to the github wiki (https://github.com/Omnicoin-Project/Omnicoin/wiki), working on omnicoinj / the android wallet, and more. But here is where you come in.

When omnicoin was first released, the 3p1c usergroup and the omnicoin award were released too. These were the main things purchased by members on hackforums, and the coin grew well. But recently, we realize that most members who wanted 3p1c and the award have purchased it. Now, most members feel that there is nothing else to do with the coin - as seen in the soaring numbers of omnicoin giveaways - causing the coin to drop in value. There is a large supply, but little demand.

This thread has been created to provide you with a place to give us suggestions for the coin. We would love to hear all your ideas, to help us create better omnicoin support. I have already compiled all the ideas from the other suggestion threads relating to OMC. More ideas from you, the community, should help provide people with more incentive to hop on board with omnicoin - because there will be more use for the coin. So please post below, any ideas are welcome.

Finally, if you would like to help omnicoin, please buy more OMC and start purchasing things with it! Any omnicoin use is hugely beneficial. Please keep mining too, and feel free to contact me or the other team members if you have questions/feedback.

CURRENT SUGGESTIONS PROPOSED (Click to View)
- A tipping system. We could implement it via userscript.
- An online OMC wallet
- There needs to be reason for people to have OMC to buy stuff with, more sellers supporting the coin.
- Dice games (although gambling is not allowed)
- More advertising (e.g. ads on HF)
- Finish the omnicoin.org website
- Accept the coins as actual money, not just some novelty tokens for awards. Omniscient should be using it to accept upgrade, stickies, etc
- More HF integration (e.g. Allowing us too deposit OMC on site or linking it directly with our OMC wallets, or add our address to our profiles - with address history to prevent scammers)
- Force exchanges like Allcrypt to be used instead of personal exchanges on HF
- Work toward making OMC accepted/used on more 3rd party sites, like exchanges
- More Pools and Faucets
- IOS / Android wallet (I am currently working on the android wallet)

Proof of stake. The price goes down because there isn't enough new money to keep up with new coins being created and no amount of dice games and anon features and online wallets and whatever other useless stuff people are going to suggest will change that.
I talked to Crypto about this already, but I'll post it here also.
A tipping system..
We could implement it via userscript.
Whenever people want to buy OMC from me, the first question they ask is "What's a good online wallet"? I think we need to get one running besides allcrypt, That's more friendly to use. It would take a long time for the downloadable wallet to sync, making people frustrated.

Yeah, that is a good point. Although allcrypt works, it would be better to have an official omnicoin wallet. We used to have one but as you know it was hacked and the domain now expired. Hopefully we can get someone working on one.

If you want I could relaunch the old wallet from omnichain.info. It's a shared wallet OC but it's better than nothing.

It wasn't hacked, it was exploited. The owner of that wallet was a l33t user who doesn't even go on HF. He copied the source code for a well known online LTC wallet which was only used to scam.

Shared wallets are NOT better than nothing. They're far too easy to exploit and it's not in the best interest of the coin to rollout a wallet which is not what we need it to be. People are already very hesitant when jumping on board with OMC because of past events. If you can have the balances stored in separate wallets then I'd fully support you bringing back your wallet but if there's shared wallets then I disagree with it being launched.

They only reason other wallets of that kind have been exploited is because of lack of knowledge and/or incompetence on the part of the owner. Shared wallets have nothing inherently bad about them. Also I didn't close my wallet because of an exploit, it was because of HURRR.

As long as the proper precautions are taken, there is nothing wrong with a shared wallet. I do agree shared wallets are inferior to a properly setup multi wallet setup, but they are also much easier to make, setup, run, and catch bugs. On a multi wallet setup one bug in any part of the wallet handling could ruin that entire wallet. I have worked on a multi wallet and have simply stopped because of the needed time, effort, and because I don't see it as a valuable use of time when OMC is dying out. If the idea of an online wallet is convenience and to get more users into OMC, I doubt anyone will spend the required time to make, setup, test, and run a multiwallet.

Also pools are shared wallets to the extreme. They aren't even separated with accounts, only by a database. Yet thousands of OMC sit in pools and no one (except Blue) take issue with it.

Sorry, I chose the wrong word. you know what I mean 😝. I know about the exploit and the owner. I am suggesting that we create a purely OMC online wallet for people to use, which is safe against the exploit used against the last wallet (and the other wallets like dogecoin). Don't you think an online wallet is a good idea?

I definitely do. I am just extremely against shared wallets. Especially considering most of those who will be using the online wallet are likely new to crypto coins. If they search their address on blockchain there's going to all kinds of posts and topics asking about why it's wrong. I just really don't want the wallets to be half assed. Not to be rude but shared wallets is simply being lazy in terms of security. It'd be nice to use the open source code for blockchain.info and make an equivalent of it for OMC.

If that were the case it would be extremely safe. The wallets are stored individually, encrypted, decrypted locally, and an option to add 2FA.
Working ones? Only one I ever seen didn't work.
Even a tip system is pointless if there is nothing you can actually buy with the coin. There needs to be reason for people to have OMC to buy stuff with.

More HF items to accept OMC would be helpful for a start. It's still claimed as the official currency of HF, but how would a newcomer even know that?
Personally I'd like Gambling via OMC too be allowed and advertised via HF.
I doubt it's possible though as I'm sure that rule is in place due too USA law.

You definitely raise a good point. We definitely need to make it a bigger part of hackforums, perhaps including it in the ads beginners see?

I will look into the code for blockchain.info, this is a good suggestion. Hopefully you will see something soon. Of course, we will only require the wallet section of blockchain because we already have a block explorer.
It was also my belief Omniscient was working on integration of Omnicoin onto the Hackforums site, is it still the plan?
