MagicJack
Come to think of it, this is merely an informational thread than a tutorial.
Before I found out about this adapter, I used to pay my home phone provider for access to a phone line and my ISP for an internet connection. Since I started using this, I've canceled my phone contract and have saved over 100$ in as little as 4 months.
How It Works
MagicJack is a small USB adapter that you plug into any USB 2.0 port on your computer or laptop. Then you take a phone and connect it directly to the other end of the MagicJack adapter (no filters needed). And you pick up the phone and instantly, you can hear a dial tone. MagicJack uses your internet connection to make phone calls.
What You Will Need
High speed internet, that's all.
But wait, it get's better...
With MagicJack you get - FREE Local and Long Distance (Since you will be using your internet connection)
- FREE Directory Assistance
- FREE Phone Number
- FREE Call Waiting
- FREE Voicemail
- FREE Caller ID
Compatibility
The MagicJack software is compatible with - Windows XP
- Windows VISTA
- Windows 7
- Intel Macs

I heard of this. The only downside to it is that you have to leave your computer on 24/7 if you want to have a phone right?

That's a good question.
I would assume so, yes, since it is connected directly to the computer's USB port.
Edit: There may be a reasonable alternative; perhaps leaving your computer on sleep or stand-by mode. I'm sure if you took the time to speak with a MagicJack representative they could figure out a solution, maybe a power adapter of some sort. Just speculating...
I bought MagicJack, the little 6 yr old on the commercial setting it up is a lie. I doubt a little kid could set this up, you have to put in all your details and choose the number you want out of the available ones. Also, the sound quality isn't great, and the free 411 service just sends you to 1-800-free-411, which is an annoying free 411 service where a bot is trying to understand what you're saying. 1-800-GOOG-411 is much better, and free. Also, after I picked up the phone, every time, it was still ringing. Plus, half the time the person on the other line couldn't hear me.
That's just my experience with it.

Sounds like it's worked out pretty horribly for you.
Sorry to hear.
Since I've had mine, I haven't had any problem with it. I concur that the sound and dial tone are both a bit scratchy but it's better than paying for a separate line.
And I've never used it's 411 feature but thanks for the heads up.
Hey, i got a 30Kbps (Killerbytes Per Second)
Connection, and i am in australia would this work, beacuse i tend to use the phone ALOT,
btw would it be free Landline to Landline Calls?

DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS MEMBER
This thread seems like just spam for magicjack, or am i just paranoid?
Tprophet did an article a couple issues ago in 2600 about it, doesn't sound like it's such a good deal to me.

It's not a spam nor is it a publicity scheme for the MagicJack product.
View it as you will but this can save you money and that was the purpose of this thread; to inform others on how to save with their home phone provider.
I love this. I had to call PayPal today and didn't pay long distance :)
